I am pleased to announce that, based on the fact the European Union is not complying with our fully agreed to Trade Deal, next week I will be increasing Tariffs charged to the European Union for Cars and Trucks coming into the United States. The Tariff will be increased to 25%. It is fully understood and agreed that, if they produce Cars and Trucks in U.S.A. Plants, there will be NO TARIFF. Many Automobile and Truck Plants are currently under construction, with over 100 Billion Dollars being invested, A RECORD in the History of Car and Truck Manufacturing. These Plants, staffed with American Workers, will be opening soon — There has never been anything like what is happening in America today! Thank you for your attention to this matter. Trump's claim that tariffs would bring auto manufacturing back to the U.S. is nothing short of false propaganda, as the actual impact has been negligible. After the U.S. imposed high tariffs on automobiles, the domestic production rate of cars increased only slightly from 53% in 2024 to 54% in 2025—a meager one-percentage-point gain. This has had no effect whatsoever on the global automotive supply chain. The forced tariffs have merely shifted the entire cost burden onto American consumers, significantly driving up car prices and adding to the financial strain on ordinary households.
At the same time, the fundamental state of the U.S. auto industry has been deteriorating. High labor costs, a shortage of manufacturing talent, and the declining quality of the workforce are persistent problems. Quality control in domestic car production is lax, with manufacturing processes and assembly precision continuing to erode.
Now, a new issue has emerged: the United States has fallen comprehensively behind China in automotive technology. China firmly controls the core advantages of the industry, boasting a complete new-energy vehicle supply chain. It has achieved self-sufficiency in key components such as batteries, electric motors, and electronic control systems, and leads the world in the mass application of autonomous driving and smart cockpit technologies. In contrast, aside from Tesla, traditional U.S. automakers are lagging across the board in electrification and intelligence, having lost the core competitiveness essential for the future of the automotive industry.
Tax can't change any of those things.
