there's an older woman at my gym who's been driving me crazy for months. every time i went into the locker room, she'd somehow end up using the locker right next to mine. didn't matter if the room was empty. she'd be right there. i started noticing it because it happened so often. yesterday morning i was running late, stressed, and not in the mood for people. i walked into the locker room and sure enough, she came in a minute later and started using the locker beside me. i finally said, "you know there are like fifty empty lockers in here, right?" the second it came out of my mouth i regretted how sharp it sounded. she looked embarrassed. then she said, "i'm sorry. i didn't realize i was doing that." i told her it was fine. she stood there quietly for a second and then said, "my husband died last year." i didn't know what to say. she gave a little shrug and said, "i spent forty years following someone around. i think i got used to having another person nearby." that was it. she grabbed her bag and headed for the door. i just stood there staring at my locker. because five minutes earlier i'd been convinced she was being inconsiderate. and maybe she was. but sometimes people are carrying around reasons you would never guess from the outside.
