Six months ago, I teamed up with the creator of The Daily on a crazy new idea. We talk to well known founders + someone close to them like their college roommate or their mom that tell a whole different side to the story. Season 1 is launching today: pod.link/1878437990

In its latest world outlook report, the @IEA declares that China is leading the age of electrification, accounting for 60% of new #RenewableEnergy in 2023. If the global race to see who will own the clean energy economy of the future is on, what does the US stand to lose? Chart Credit: @IEA and @semafor

@drvolts Right, another way to think about intensity is around the trade offs people are willing to accept to address the issue. And this is where support has traditionally been fairly shallow — they know it’s important but aren’t willing to make changes that negatively impact them.

... they aren't going to rally for you, send you money, elevate this over other issues, etc. There's virtually no one who prioritizes getting rid of guar gum over other contested issues (economy, immigration, guns, etc.). Supportive polls notwithstanding, there's no *intensity*.

Maybe this is unfair but I have come to see public opinion polls on climate change as utterly useless. Climate types always draw sweeping conclusions from them but in my experience they tell us absolutely nothing about the political economy of climate. rff.org/publications/r…

@Jason Did the same thing, you’re gonna love the power resiliency and independence. Expanding your system down the road isn’t really a thing, so oversize both the solar and battery storage. #1 thing I hear from people is “I wish I got more”

Huge kudos to @panamaredhat and the @buildingdecarb team for helping to pass #SB1221! This bill directs the CPUC to evaluate whether electrification is more cost effective than gas line replacements, and establish up to 30 pilot project neighborhoods. And critically, it creates a neighborhood electrification framework that bypasses the "obligation to serve" that currently prevents these programs from existing. Amazing work!
Building Decarbonization Coalition@buildingdecarb

🎉@CAGovernor signed #SB1221! This key climate bill will pave the way for neighborhood-scale decarbonization and upgrade our communities with clean energy infrastructure for long-term energy affordability. @SenDaveMin @BuildingDecarb @earthjustice @nrdc tinyurl.com/4fz6jw8w

@AJamesMcCarthy @elonmusk If nuclear can outperform and outcompete solar on price, that would be a good thing. It just hasn’t been able to do that yet and the trend is only getting worse. Hopefully the ADVANCE act can help with that. Even in optimistic scenarios nuclear scale up is 10-20 years out.

@elonmusk I am a big fan of solar on roofs. It’s just a no brainer, and the land is already used so it’s serving dual purpose. I just hate the idea of these huge solar farms covering beautiful natural landscapes when nuclear would significantly outperform it with a far smaller footprint.

One square mile on the surface receives ~2.5 Gigawatts of solar energy. That’s Gigawatts with a “G”. It’s ~30% higher in space. The Starlink global satellite network is entirely solar/battery powered. Factoring in solar panel efficiency (25%), packing density (80%) and usable daylight hours (~6), a reasonable rule of thumb is 3GWh of energy per square mile per day. Easy math, but almost no one does these basic calculations.

@MichaelWWara Or getting the energy delivered to where it is consumed. For a variety of reasons (structural incentives, climate adaptation) that is turning out to be pretty damn difficult too.
