This would be a good time for: a.) STRATCOM commanders who implement orders to fire nuclear missiles to read up on Nuremberg and prosecutions for obeying orders to commit war crimes; and b.) for cabinet members to reread the 25th Amendment and have each other on speed dial.

Any student of history will tell you this is an extremely dangerous moment. People like Trump who make wild threats to do insane homicidal things again and again are full of shit—until they aren’t. All the safeguards are gone. The generals have been removed. Our allies have been alienated. Congressional Republicans will follow Trump to the apocalypse. We really are on the razor’s edge of total disaster here and millions if not billions of lives hang in the balance.

An American president threatening the death of an ancient civilization is in some ways the end of the 250-year moral experiment of a constitutional republic that the framers saw as a model for all mankind.

For those hoping for a last minute 25th amendment, or Congressional action today: I’d remind you that the VP is currently in Hungary campaigning for a Putin ally, and is not present to convene the US cabinet. And Congress stands in recess. The guardrails are off.

Congress must immediately end this reckless war of choice in Iran before Donald Trump plunges us into World War III. It’s time for every single Republican to put patriotic duty over party and stop the madness. Enough.

Rep. John Garamendi, D-Calif., criticized President Donald Trump's national defense strategy on Thursday, asking a Pentagon official, "What in the hell is going on?" "We seem to have a president that every morning wakes up with a different strategy," he said during a House Armed Services Committee hearing. The hearing, which comes as the war in Iran continues to escalate, addressed U.S. defense strategy and posture and included testimony from Under Secretary of Defense for Policy Elbridge Colby. During the hearing, Garamendi asked Colby to explain Trump's second-term defense strategy, including launching the war in Iran, the use of missile strikes against alleged drug boats in the Caribbean and the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. Colby, who also testified this week before the Senate Armed Services Committee, said he believes Trump is "advancing American interests." Garamendi disagreed. "In the president's national defense strategy, he said he would not be distracted by interventionism, endless wars, regime change and nation building, but that is precisely what's going on," he said.
