@__jesse_li very cool! same, I tried with screenX/screenY but in the end using only the video feed was more reliable.

@javierbyte Yep, both pages are playing the same video (but the main one has a css filter to make it blurry) and doing math on the parent and child's screenX/screenY shared with postMessage. I struggled with cross platform behavior and getting things to line up without magic constants.

Me: "I want body { background: transparent }" The web platform: "no" Me: screen captures own display, injects fiducial markers, tracks viewport position, composites background buffer

@__jesse_li that's interesting! is it playing the same video? also, are you using screenLeft/Top to determine the position of both windows? it looks really smooth.

Yeah, there must be better ways. I started with a pattern but then had trouble dealing with compression (in my test, Safari always gives 1x instead of Retina), and then decided that for a proof of concept, color finding will do 😂 I also thought about hiding it in the favicon, but browser compatibility would have been tough.

Try it yourself: backgroundtransparent.vercel.app (you need to share the full screen the browser window is on) Inspired by @mausmoto's ShaderGlass, I wanted something like that for the web! Liquid Diamond is by @shuding of course, who got me into shaders recently.

I'm very excited that @shuding is sharing this now.

@pilcrowonpaper it feels more tangible to me. DynamoDB items, sorting, and GSIs are easier to imagine in the physical world.

I don't hate relational DB or anything but there's a small part of me that thinks a document DB like DynamoDB is better and more "correct"

Today was my last day at Vercel. It was a hard decision. Vercel was not just a job. It was ZEIT. My first app, first deployment, first open source contribution. The dream opportunity to work with Next.js. It was five years. Sweating over naming, mental models, progressive disclosure. Explaining, re-explaining, iterating. It was dozens of diagrams and videos, hundreds of docs, thousands of words, endless feedback. It was the tension between craft and speed. Hype, whiplash, and growth. It was for the web.
