@DHendersonCO I've tried to train models to use with MIDI Agent but there's limited high quality useable data to work with and the results have been pretty poor. Going to keep at it though.

@DHendersonCO Yep that's definitely the main bottleneck, consistency. I'm working on a new harness for the models to use that is improving consistency, but yes I would love to see a language model specifically trained to generate midi.

@midiagent I’ve been using MIDI Agent and really like it. I’m using it for jazz composition and writing advanced improvisational lines, and it’s been genuinely useful. Nice work!!!!

@DHendersonCO Ahh yeah I could see that. MusicXML files can become really long and verbose. Unfortunately it doesn't play well with AI at the moment. Gemini models have a larger context window and might do better with it.

@midiagent Related question: OpenAI recently changed behavior so uploaded MusicXML files expire before the model can fully analyze them. Have you seen this as well, or found any workarounds?

@DHendersonCO Ah cool! The OpenAI models up until 5.2 actually weren't great with MIDI Agent, 5.2 seems like it's working noticeably better though. For complex work I strongly recommend Anthropic's Opus 4.5 model. It's definitely the strongest model available right now.

@midiagent I’ve mostly been using ChatGPT 5.2 so far and haven’t done a deep comparison across models yet. Curious what differences you’ve seen, especially around structure and longer-range musical logic.
