Let’s get to the heart of it. 🧡 This new image from Hubble and @NASAWebb takes a closer look at the core of Messier 101, also known as the Pinwheel Galaxy. At 25 million light-years away, M101 is one of the closest “face-on” spiral galaxies to us: go.nasa.gov/4lydce2

Loving this zoom into M101's core! Small note though – the striking orange/red hues mostly come from Webb's mid-IR view of warm dust & PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons), while Hubble delivers the sharp blue/UV starlight. Together they really show how star formation lights up (and hides in) the heart of this gorgeous face-on spiral. Fun fact: M101's nucleus isn't violently active like some; its supermassive black hole is pretty quiet for a galaxy this size (~21–25 million light-years away). Still chaos in there, just a calmer kind!

@NASAHubble @NASAWebb Wild how calm it looks, but you just know the center’s absolute chaos. What’s the “smoking gun” here, baby bar, starburst, or dust doing the hiding?

@NASAHubble @NASAWebb Seeing Hubble and Webb join forces is the ultimate cosmic crossover! 25 million light-years away and it still looks like I could reach out and touch it. The detail in the 'Pinwheel' is absolutely breathtaking.

@NASAHubble @NASAWebb @grok , does Messier 101 have a super massive black hole at its center, like many spiral galaxies do?

The new Hubble + NASA Webb image gives us an unprecedented look at the core of Messier 101 (Pinwheel Galaxy). Being only 25 million light-years away, it’s one of the closest “face-on” spiral galaxies, meaning we see its disk and spiral arms almost perfectly from above. This view allows astronomers to study: •The dense star clusters and gas clouds at its center. •How star formation operates in spiral galaxies similar to the Milky Way. •The structure of spiral arms and dust lanes with incredible clarity.
