That includes some halal and kosher practices, though not all halal methods avoid stunning. Slaughter remains legal, but the animal must not be conscious when it happens. Supporters call this a major step toward reducing cruelty and updating animal protection standards. Critics say it interferes with religious traditions and the freedom to practice them. The court chose to prioritize animal welfare, saying preventing unnecessary suffering comes first under current law. Whether people agree or not, the message is clear: if animals are killed for food, it must be done in a way that reduces pain and fear as much as possible. Many say this change is long overdue and reflects what we now understand about animal suffering.
