OK, time for some highly unpopular truth. This is NOTHING like what a self-sufficient homestead looks like, and sketches like this are downright harmful disinformation to people who actually want to pursue self-sufficiency. First of all, one acre, even in a great climate, is FAR too little. The only way to supply a family's yearly caloric needs on just one acre would be to throw out all dairy and almost all meat, and dedicate most of the space to calorie-dense crops like corn, potatoes, and various cereals. At most, you could spare enough calories to raise a handful of meat chicks a year, so you'd have to eat almost like a vegan, and I seriously doubt most people who post such pictures like that idea. Secondly, an enclosed 0.3 acre space cannot be called a pasture by any stretch of the imagination, and can barely be called a corral. The fact that this tiny space has been further divided into three separate paddocks is hilarious. In a good climate, you might still need something like a full hectare (~2.5 acres) to feed a single cow, and that's assuming a fertile pasture with lots of calorie-dense forage. There's so much stuff wrong with this picture that I can't even address all of it. Like, the very presence of a LAWN on a one-acre homestead supposedly shooting for self-sufficiency is ridiculous, as is the fact that more space has been devoted to the vegetable garden than to grains — and the garden is tiny to begin with! You know what an actual, traditional self-sufficient homestead looks like? You've got a huge rectangle with just "PASTURE" written all across it, and then you have a tiny square in some corner of it that says "everything else", in a font so small that you need to strain your eyes to read it. That's what it looks like seen from above. Ruminant herbivores like goats, sheep, and especially cattle, need TONS of space. Now, before you tell me that this or that family is self-sufficient on an acre, I need to stress the point that feeding your livestock bought feed cannot be understood as self-sufficiency in any sense of the word. After all, if keeping animals in tiny enclosures and feeding them bought hay and grains was self-sufficiency, factory farms would be self-sufficient too. That can be seen as a step in a good direction, but ultimately, it's buying food with a lot of extra steps. Finally, one of the hardest pills to swallow for many folks here — to be self-sufficient on a carnivore diet, you'd need an enormous amount of land (by a homesteader's standards). The caloric output per unit of space of a pasture under cattle, sheep, or goats is EXCEEDINGLY TINY compared to that of a field under corn, potatoes, or wheat. Like it or not, being self-sufficient on a modest amount of land entails EATING A LOT OF PLANTS — plants of species that are currently rather unpopular with the hip health freak crowd. OK, sorry about the rant, but after having seen pictures like this a hundred times here, I had to get this one out of my system. Precious few people are going to read this, and even fewer will actually accept it. Meaning, people will keep sharing this stuff and buying one-acre plots, expecting to become self-sufficient on them. Then, they'll come back here and say: "Self-sufficiency doesn't work — I've tried it!" For the few of you that made it this far — shoot for enough land to support around ten cow-calf pairs year-round, without outside inputs, and more is always better. The more land you have, the more meat and dairy you'll be able to eat, and the less work you'll have to do per unit of food produced. Conversely, the less land you have, the more vegan your diet will have to be, and the more you'll have to work to produce your yearly calories. Go where land is cheap, and buy lots of it.
