The Unpopular Verdict: “No token, no future” is one of the laziest lines in Web3 People repeat it like it explains everything. It doesn’t. Most products don’t survive because users are financially aligned. They survive because they solve something clean enough that people keep using them without thinking about incentives. Tokens don’t create retention. They usually just rent attention. And rented attention always leaves when the rewards stop. Relay is a good example. I use it for bridging and I don’t care about farming it or any reward loop. It just gets out of the way and does the job. That’s the point. The uncomfortable part is this: a lot of “token first” thinking is just complexity pretending to be design. And complexity doesn’t scale into real usage.
