Pune may face a serious water shortage from April 15 as water tanker operators have announced an indefinite strike across the city. Tanker supply has already been stopped in areas like Handewadi, Mohammadwadi, Undri and Pisoli, where many housing societies depend heavily on private tankers for daily water needs.
The tanker operators say they are protesting against alleged harassment by traffic police and new rules being imposed on them. One major issue is the requirement to keep a helper with every tanker. Operators say this increases costs and that they now face a ₹1,500 fine if they do not follow the rule.
The tanker association has also demanded an increase of ₹100 per tanker to cover rising costs. Until the administration responds, operators say they will continue the strike. Housing societies have been asked to support the tanker owners by writing to the traffic police and Pune Police Commissioner.
