@KropolisGaming Yeah, pretty easily the worst mainline game for me.

@emergeofchance @idonotexistelol Specifically, we had a game *try* to do $80 in The Outer Worlds 2 and then revert back to $70 due to preorders being down. Only games with a certain level of prestige can do these prices. It won’t just become a new standard because GTA does it.

I'm curious to anyone else who actually believes this. I want you guys to properly explain with proof and sources that show this claim that GTA 6 succeeding will be bad for the Industry. $100 editions of games already exist alongside $80

@idonotexistelol Genuinely, why Yeah if it was just subjectively disliking it sure, but there is an absolutely valid case to be made about how this game doing great would be a terrible sign for the industry in many cases

@copperCity17 They don’t review games that don’t have buzz or interest. And if a game has buzz or interest, it’s likely better than average. If IGN reviewed every single game released on Steam, a 5 probably would be much closer to the mean.

@selStreams @The__Goomba You can get it on PS3 or Vita, but it’s not available in any way on PS4/5.

@The__Goomba I think you can buy it digitally for PS4/PS5? pretty sure it’s a ps1 classic, no? I vaguely remember it being possible to get but kind of annoying. might have to do it from the web browser?

I could have sworn Vangrant Story was on PS4/5 but apparently not. Thought it looked cool so wanted to try it.

@lazyjusten Yeah, it’s intentionally reductive. The point being that you *cant* reduce video games down to just that. Essentially just pointing out that video games have all of that *and then some* to take into account when critiquing / reviewing.

@Jumpmanryan I think that’s kinda reductive because sight and sound can mean so many things in a film.

@JurassicRabbit A 7 out of 10 isn’t necessarily viewed as mid, but it’s lackluster when there is such an overabundance of 8+ out of 10 games out there. Way too many games release for good to be good enough for the average gamer. Why play a 7 when there are hundreds of 8+ games in my backlog?

Meanwhile, other mediums are only toying with sight and sound. It’s simpler for those to be spectacular failures as opposed to games. It’s why review outlets typically explore the full scale more in movies & music than they do with video games. It’s why 7 is viewed as average.

A game could look like ass and have the worst writing ever conceived. But what if it feels decent to play, runs at a stable 60FPS, is bug-free, etc.? Known, anticipated games that get reviewed typically don’t fail in every aspect.

@lazyjusten I think it’s fine as well! I just wonder why they’re even using the Resident Evil IP if it’s not gonna have anything Resident Evil in it. But it’s just a trailer, I’d assume the movie will have some stuff.

@Jumpmanryan I think that’s fine tho. RE7 didn’t have anything recognizable when it was announced either. It’s great to just tell new stories in this universe.

@GoodGameKofi I don’t think this really means anything considering Sharma took over just two months ago. I assume they’ll wait and see how Halo, Gears, and/or Fable perform as they’re new games releasing simultaneously on everything. The numbers for those will be very telling.

@PaulTassi I think we’d need to see how well these games are selling on Xbox hardware before coming to that conclusion. Along with total sales numbers for the games. Some numbers, like The Outer Worlds 2, look really low. But I imagine they’re similarly low everywhere.

My takeaway from this is that you make online MP Xbox-PS crossplatform, but almost everything else you make exclusive as it's probably not worth the brand damage for 5 million sales across 11+ games

Here's some Xbox games that sold over 100K copies on PlayStation (@alineaanalytics estimates). Thirteen first-party Xbox titles have now cleared the 100K unit milestone on PlayStation. Collectively, they’ve generated $667M in gross revenue for Microsoft, as per our estimates. This analysis doesn’t include Call of Duty. We’ve also excluded titles from acquired studios that were released on PlayStation before Microsoft’s ownership, as well as legacy contractual obligations like Deathloop and Ghostwire: Tokyo. We dive into the list deeper over on our free Substack (link in bio!), but here's a couple of highlights: - Forza Horizon 5, which launched on PS5 last year, three-and-a-half years after the Xbox/PC versions, accounts for almost half of those revenues. That’s $323M via 5.8M copies sold - Sea of Thieves is also doing well on PlayStation. As one of the first titles in the initial porting strategy, it has moved 2.7M copies on the platform and generated nearly $100M there. It's also shown shown impressive long-term retention, bringing in 300K monthly active users (MAUs) on PS5 - Indiana Jones and the Great Circle has moved 537K units on PlayStation 5, generating $37M in revenue roughly one year after its launch. Released on Sony’s hardware just four months after its Xbox debut, the title has already outsold its Steam counterpart. - Meanwhile, Ninja Gaiden 4 and Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 have both surpassed 250K units on PS5, with each title nearing $20M in PS5 gross revenue, while Starfield sales have continued to trickle in after its tepid PS5 launch a couple of weeks back, now passing 200K. Full analysis over on Substack (link in bio)

@Glassdoorgamer @xhogrider @CultureCrave That depends on her priorities. Data also shows that hardware stopped selling when they went multi platform, and without people buying hardware, Xbox doesn’t get a percentage of third-party game sells. She said she’s console first. Individual games revenue vs ecosystem revenue
