March 25, 1949. The Soviet regime’s Operation ‘Priboj’ deported nearly 94,000 people from the #Baltics — 34,000 of them from #Lithuania, including teachers, doctors, farmers, clergy, and freedom fighters. Over the next decade, Lithuania faced 35 mass deportations. A total of 132,000 people, mostly women and children, were exiled to uninhabitable regions of Russia. Many men who resisted were executed. Fewer than half of the deportees ever returned. The crimes of communism never faced a true ‘Nuremberg’. This lack of accountability allowed the same imperial mindset to survive — and today, Russia’s aggression against #Ukraine shows the consequences of unpunished crimes. Strongly welcome the decision by the #ICC Office of the Prosecutor to open an investigation into crimes against humanity committed by the Lukashenka regime against the people of Belarus from 1 May 2020 onwards, following Lithuania’s request submitted to the International Criminal Court in 2024. No regime should believe it can torture, deport, persecute, or silence its opponents and citizens without consequences. Justice must prevail. Widespread and systematic attacks on civilians must be met with a clear and consistently applied accountability mechanism — because accountability is not only justice for victims; it is deterrence for the future. Those responsible must be held to account.

On 11 March 1990, Lithuania restored its Independence. Despite Soviet aggression, propaganda and an economic blockade, we persisted with courage, truth and unity. That choice still defines us. 🇱🇹

We mark 11 years since the assassination of Boris Nemtsov, a critic of Putin, brutally killed near the Kremlin. Lithuanian diplomats joined other countries to lay flowers at his memorial in Moscow. In today’s Russia, political repressions get only worse, any dissent is crushed.

On the Day of Resistance to Crimea’s occupation, Lithuania condemns Russia’s war of aggression and fully supports Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. We demand Russia end its aggression, withdraw from all occupied 🇺🇦 territories, and release all prisoners.

The #EU stands united on Belarus - today, the @EUCouncil extended sanctions against Belarus for another year as Aliaksandr Lukashenka’s regime continues internal repression and detentions of Belarusian and foreign citizens on absurd grounds, launches hybrid attacks on the EU Member States, and allows Russia to use Belarusian territory for its war of aggression against #Ukraine. We welcome the 🇪🇺 collective agreement to maintain pressure on the regime responsible for serious international crimes.

In a virtual statement at the #OSCE Permanent Council, I urged to use every available mechanism to ensure Russia is held fully accountable for its aggression and war crimes. As Russia’s full‑scale war against Ukraine enters its 5th year - and the illegal occupation of Crimea its 13th - it continues to relentlessly violate the fundamental principles of international law and undermine the very foundations of the OSCE. We are witnessing a sustained assault on the sovereignty and territorial integrity of an OSCE participating State, marked by deliberate and systematic attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure, forced deportations, abductions of 🇺🇦 children, abuse of POWs, torture, and executions - acts that constitute war crimes. #Lithuania🇱🇹 will never recognize Russia’s illegal occupation or attempted annexation of territory of Ukraine - neither de jure nor de facto. #StandWithUkraine Slava Ukraini! 🇺🇦
