Found a nice video about blueshell in Mario Kart.
The cartoon racing game I played in my childhood was Nexon's KartRider, and it had a similar item, the UFO, it limits the first player's speed for a short time. I understand why it exists.
Different from Mario Kart, KartRider is more punishing in mistakes players made. And it has a pure racing mode without items, this combo makes the game desperately frustrating for players who falls behind. While the item mode gives less feeling of achievement, since you are not winning with your skills but a little too much luck, but much more playable for all.
Partly I don't agree about this design because I know the emotion that behind the players who need blueshell or UFO, is envy. I know how ugly this emotion is, it's the worst sin that I hate it so much.
But the frustration of falling behind in a racing game, is so natural and real, I cannot deny that as a human, I don't want to devote time and effort to the racing game that always let me feel the frustration of falling behind again and again. I will just give up and turn to other easier games.
The real life or real auto racing is without blueshell or UFO, but since Mario Kart and KartRider are games which allow us to escape from the reality, it is a reasonable design.
But what if... real life has it, too? What if in real life, there are mechanisms that limiting the 1st player's speed can make it playable for all? Like in pre-1980s American companies there was not so much competition, and American workers lived happier than now. Traditonal Japanese companies still stick on this path, despite many people think it brings a disadvantage. I'm not sure do Japanese company owners know this blueshell theory, or just following the old way by instinct, but they are right.
It's not just about two cartoon racing games anymore, but a wisdom for real life.
And there's one thing important: this mechanism of limiting top players, must not be controlled by selfish humans, but transparently visible, explorable, and predictable rules. The power of punishing the top players is too strong to fall into wrong people's hands, their envy will destroy everything. Once it happens, it'll not be like a blueshell in Mario Kart that brings more fun, but like Overwatch's frequent nerfs, leading to endless arguments, and player decreasing.
