@Fpimentel14 @RyanFMandelbaum Thanks Felipe. Of course - Catalonia. The most amusing thing is Kaufman's guide to North America birds in Spanish. The warblers are chipes (Mexico) rather than reinitas (Spain). And certainly with all the counties in Central and South America there would be other names too.

i love finches, so my most-wanted bird for my PR vacation was the island's only native finch, the antillean euphonia. fruit-eating birds like euphonias fared poorly after maria, and have grown harder to find. well, not only did i find one, but i found a pair building a nest!

@RyanFMandelbaum In Puerto Rico, I have seen many hummingbirds in house gardens, specially with plants with flowers pending from trees. One good place in San Juan to find them is the Jardín Botánico of the UPR in Rio Piedras.

sequel: i’ve been having a lot of trouble finding hummingbirds. today i bumped into another birder, told him who i birded with yesterday, and then that birder basically said “a friend of sergio is a friend of mine” and arranged for us to go to someone’s house to see hummingbirds

extremely cool: took a guided bird tour in puerto rico for my birthday and then at the end of the tour the guide said “do you have your field guide with you” and i said yeah here it is and he said do you want me to sign it and i said what and then looked and he co-wrote it

King Eider, a continuing duke sea duck at Great Kills, Staten Island. It's a cold long day. I started at 8am and ended at 8pm, none stop. But it was a good birding day. There were Field sparrows, Peregrine falcon and Screech owl.

Great Kills Park Staten Island 02/15/22 Another no show for the King Eider until sunset and he stuck close to mud flats & water's edge, but we know why he avoided the Jetty - Red Fox managed those Jetty rocks like a mountain climber. (video / cropped) @BirdCentralPark

I was stuck at home most of the day doing work, but did manage to escape just long enough to snap a few pics at our unofficial national bird: the Reina Mora (Puerto Rican Spindalis). These guys love flowers, one reason why taking pictures of them never disappoints.

Arrived in PR last night after two year absence. Puerto Rican Spindalis, Woodpecker, Oriole, Bananquits greeted me this morning while sipping coffee. Haven’t even left the house yet. I love this place.
