Brooklyn via Puerto Rico. 🇵🇷 Mostly about birds. Sometimes about PR. Occasionally, about both.

If an owl makes a noise in the middle of a forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it give a hoot?

After years of serenading me from deep in the woods, this Barred Owl popped into the open to say hi today. Finally!

i think some of the new bird names should take a cue from the absolutely spectacular “plain pigeon.” regular storm-petrel. normal cormorant. unremarkable flycatcher. do it

@RyanFMandelbaum I’m actually thinking it’s white spruce. It’s the only thing that fits the bill - though yeah - not super common. Let’s see what the Greenwood tree map shows. Thanks!

@BirdsBrooklyn otherwise, there's lots of conifer trees at green-wood and you can probably just pick up a lot of different cones and see if any fit the bill, lol. they have white spruce/baldcypress which have tiny cones, but those aren't really ones you'd "sometimes see around"

My son has been tasked by school with collecting “those tiny pine cones you sometimes see around” for a craft project. So my question to you is, what conifer has “tiny pine cones” and where can I find one such tree - preferably in Prospect Park, GWC or another accesible location.

Skull? Pelvis? Found the other day on a NY beach. I’m pretty good with my local marine life and it doesn’t seem to be any of the usual characters

It’s migration day in my yard! So far this morning I’ve seen a yellow warbler, magnolia, pewee, least flycatcher, common yellowthroat! Da profe day of the year, every year!

I just saw my lifer Cerulean Warbler on a street tree and two minutes later it got attacked by a Kestrel. Yikes! So wild. Thankfully, I think the little guy made it.

@RyanFMandelbaum You’re forgetting the “sorry I’m ten minutes late my last meeting ran long can we recap the discussion all over again and start from the beginning” people.

there are two kinds of people: those who log into the video meeting one minute early and those who log in one minute late

@ibathedaily I would hear them over the summer at 4PM every day over the summer in some non-descript Rhode Island suburbs with the right kind of habitat next door.

Has anyone used ChatGPT or equivalent IA technology for IDing birds? Is Merlín working on integrating such technology? Genuinely curious if anyone has any insights.
