@opsecsmasher 1. They cost half that much. 2. An F-14 would cost $200 million in 2026 dollars. They were very much not invisible.

In the 1991 Persian Gulf war, the United States had 86 aircraft destroyed or damaged by enemy action. Of those, more than half (~51) were attrited within the first 20 days of the onset of the air war. (Gulf Airpower Survey, p. 61.)

@NavyStrang Didn't it take a direct hit and still land safe? That's pretty impressive

Once out of hundreds if not over a thousand sorties is pretty incredible. The odds will always eventually be in the enemy's favor. Allies lost aircraft almost daily against the Iraqis and weekly vs Serbia.
Nuclear Reactor Neutron@TheSatanKi9895

Doesn't change the fact that they detected, successfully locked (and maintained lock), and hit the F-35. Also, the F-35 doesn't seem to he maneuvering, so they managed to fool its "advanced" ECM and MAWS. A country which has been under sanctions for around of 50 years did that.

@NavyStrang 24 planes were downed in Iraq over 6 years - 4 per year. Iran downed one in under 3 weeks.

There are already cougars on both sides of the highway. The bridge connects two huge wildlife areas. The whole point of the bridge is that it will keep the cats OUT of populated areas.
Christopher F. Rufo ⚔️@christopherrufo

The craziest thing about Newsom's $100 million wildlife bridge is that it will allow cougars, an apex predator, direct access into a suburban neighborhood filled with pets, children, and the elderly. It's like the radical environmentalist version of The Purge.

The vessel OOCL SUNFLOWER encountered heavy weather en-route to Long Beach and suffered a container stack collapse. Flexport has begun notifying all customers with cargo on the ship to expect delays and inspect any containers that arrive for damaged goods.

@NavyStrang The important thing here is not whether a F35 was shot down, it was the fact that Iran's air defense was able to detect, track, lock onto and shoot and damage a F-35. This alone is a form of deterrence, forcing the US to continue using expensive standoff munitions

As for it cutting out right after the hit... I mean, yeah, of course it does; the Iranians are claiming it was a shoot down and showing the plane fly away sort of debunks that claim from them.

@SureFireSearle It's designed to support the growth of the central valley. Connecting it to LA would be nice, but it isn't necessary as it would just compete with airlines.

@NavyStrang Im glad they are laying track, that being said - the distance from population centers to either terminus is so long - a 2 hour drive from LA - i honestly wonder if anyone will ever ride it.

@Lazarus_Navy The Avengers worked in conjunction with UUVs and USVs and you aren't at any less risk on an LCS because you don't actually know where the minefield starts.

@NavyStrang Those Avengers would have to go into the minefield to hunt/sweep, risking ships and crews. Using the unmanned CUSV and helicopter-based systems a great improvement. Retiring the MH-53 w/o replacement is of much greater concern.

It's not overhyped. The MCMVs, though old, were still "modern" in terms of their hunting capabilities and also could sweep much more effectively than an LCS. What is more, the could operate within the minefield. Even so, MCM is not a ship, it is a mission. Whether the main platform is an MCMV or an LCS you still need escorts, L-class ships, staffs, stores ships, etc, and none of that is in place.
Mike Coté@ratlpolicy

This is yet another overhyped & misleading talking point. The minesweepers were 30+ years old, relied on sending sailors into harm's way, & were due for normal decommissioning. That decision was made by the Biden administration in 2024. The LCS minesweeping package is a replacement for that capability - yet unproven, but modernized & safer for American sailors. Also, Iran's ability to mine the Strait is being degraded hourly. This claim is meant entirely to craft a narrative of poor planning & inevitable failure, but this narrative is detached from observable reality.

@NavyStrang What are you having to “redesign” from the keel up? You make it modern with the ability to improve. Its not something that has to have a 50 year lifespan or a crew of 4500+.
