Looking at the by-elections, it feels like British politics is in a bit of a Game of Thrones-style stalemate - each of the many parties is too weak to win, but strong enough to stop its rivals from winning...

@rcolvile You could well be right. But interesting that Makerfield result was despite the usual sniping & smearing from MSM (which I only saw a bit of as I dont watch British TV much or read UK newspapers)

@rcolvile @CPSThinkTank @Telegraph Lyon’s is another Brexit goon, totally discredited, wheeled out by Tories to justify their opportunism in 2016. You can continue to be flat earth morons, or engage with the globally accepted, intensely intricate, modelling performed by independent economists across the world.

@simonmedhurst @rcolvile @CPSThinkTank @Telegraph Remainers are so dim. Exports are a cost, genius. They are domestic inputs consumed by foreigners. They do not & cannot make us wealthier. We export solely so we can import, & the less we have to export to obtain imports, the better. It's called Economics.

@rcolvile @CPSThinkTank @Telegraph Can you explain how making trade more difficult with our nearest and largest market (without anything like a commensurate easing of trade elsewhere) could ever be anything other than negative for the UK economy?

Javier Cercas, outstanding Spanish novelist and writer, and self-described socialist voter, summarizes well the situation in Spain in El Pais: it is hard to explain "that a president should remain in office when his wife, his brother, his latest right-hand person, his previous right-hand person, the right-hand person of his previous right-hand person, and a group from his own party have all been charged by the courts, and whose Organization Secretary, according to the judge, devised a ‘criminal structure’ to discredit adversaries” elpais.com/eps/2026-06-20…

@cjsnowdon A PM with all the failings of the one he will replace. Like Starmer he has literally no idea of how the economy actually grows nor how businesses provide goods & services.

@CarpeZytha @cjsnowdon What's funny is that Manchester's buses have performed worse than most other cities that spent far less.

@magathsanto @s8mb So it's "based" to believe in flat-Earth Economics that have failed every time? I mean, are you just retarded? Seriously?

I read this Miatta Fahnbulleh essay from 2019 (apparently she is likely to be a major figure in Burnham’s govt). The main ideas are doing full Net Zero by 2035, requiring a four-day work week and mandating that workers become the “dominant shareholders in every enterprise”. It only mentions economic growth to say that it has stopped benefitting working people and that climate change is more important than it. foreignaffairs.com/articles/unite…

@mattrooney11 @s8mb So when bad things happen to an economy you think it's better to be poorer, not richer. You really aren't too bright.

@s8mb Addressing climate change is more important than your small-minded preference for short-term economic growth. The collapse of the gobal economy caused by 3 degrees will be the biggest event in human history. Your half a million pension pot will be worth a dime.

@janrosenow This is false. EVs have substantially lower ranges & take smmore time to charge. That is LESS EFFICIENT. Heat pumps cannot heat water sufficiently to avoid Legionaires. That is LESS EFFICIENT. You look at only 1 aspect. Stop spreading disinformation.

Electrofficiency: electric tech is far more efficient than the fossil tech it replaces. A heat pump, an EV, an induction hob, same job on a fraction of the energy. That’s why electrification taking centre stage at COP matters. Excellent piece 👇 theguardian.com/environment/20…

@frombexley @worstall Exports are a cost, moron. They are domestic inputs consumed by foriegners. Increased exports means less domestic production for people in the UK to consume. Remainers are always so ignorant.

@PeterStefanovi2 Right. We are 6% of GDP poorer. £200 billion. Where? Where is this missing £200 billion from UK production? Utterly moronic.
