Upgrade results: DX-286 first, then ML-880, and finally ML-880 with NR. Very strong wind caused quite a bit of noise in the audio. Yeah, I damaged the front glass panel while taking it apart, so now I’m looking for replacement options. Sorry about the audio quality. #radio #sdr

I made two mods to the ML-880: added ferrite beads to the speaker leads and applied 3-ohm conductive shielding film to the display. The ML-880 no longer reacts to hand capacitance, and the noise level is lower now. Finally, I cracked the receiver’s plastic front panel(((

Mike Bazley, VK6HD, was a legendary Australian ham radio operator. I was fortunate enough to work him on 160m CW, and I’m proud to have him in my log. The QSL card from VK6HD is something I truly treasure and will always remember.

@AlanDXSWL I was told to select the Hi-Z mode for the telescopic antenna — and yes, after that the HF signal became stronger. I need to do another comparison test.

@RA4SD That radio was on my list of things to buy as soon as I could. I think I'll wait for an upgraded version.

The MLite-800 is basically deaf on LW and MW. The DX-286 - winner! There are mods for it — it really needs shielding around the display, and the audio codec is noisy too.

@indiawhiskey1 @dcardenosa If I need SSB, I use the Belka-DX and BELKA — I have both receivers in my collection :)

The DX-286 receives noticeably better — solid 5/5 from me. The ML-880 has display noise issues, so I’d give it 3.5/5. There are some mods for it, and they’re definitely worth doing.

@erickdahan Erick, thanks for the reply. My ham radio activity is mostly on hold because of the war with Ukraine (I'm against war). My current QTH is very low, with a lot of utility wires around the roof, so these days I’m mainly active as an SWL.

Spent nearly four hours up on the roof doing post-winter maintenance. Reworked the antenna mounting hardware, and one of the guy lines failed — the turnbuckle actually snapped clean in half! First time I’ve ever seen a failure like that. #antenna #radio #hobby #swl #dxing
