Happy to see that Rick has been voted first team All State on the 2024 Alabama Sports Writers' Association Class 3A All State team. He had a fantastic season, and we are very proud of him. ⁦@rickmcbrideiii⁩ ⁦@MA_Swoopsal.com/highschoolspor…

Can’t agree more. It’s a complex decision. We sent our oldest to prep school in ‘24 for a post grad year. We had a tough choice among schools, but ultimately chose @avonoldfarms. While his baseball pursuits didn’t turn out the way we expected, everything else about Avon was fantastic, and our son gained so much from his experience there. So, somewhat ironically, it was a good investment even though the primary objective wasn’t achieved - but only because everything else about Avon was such a wonderful fit.

Prep/boarding school baseball is not just about baseball. Families also have to think about independence, academics, structure, social maturity, distance from home, cost, and whether the athlete is truly ready for that environment. Fit matters.

The AHSAA does a terrible job updating playoff scores. It should not be this hard

@Coach_HugginsII Man this is such a great comment. People have no idea how rare a 4.5 runner is in HS and yet they throw that number around like it’s commonplace. As you say, a 4.8 is flying - hell, many times the 4.8 kid is the fastest player on a HS football field.

Do people realize how fast it is to run a 4.8 as a high school player? Lol I mean this wholeheartedly. Anything sub 5.0 is fast for a teenager. Especially the players that are over 200 lbs.

Tough end to the playoffs for MA & @reidmcbride12 (c/o ‘28, 6-2, 180) on Fri. MA was super young this yr, so young that Reid - just a Soph - was its most tenured player. Huge yr for Reid play-wise (below), but most proud of how he handled being a captain & team leader at age 16. Bright future for MA & Reid the next 2 yrs.

In G1, Reid threw a 5-inn CG 3 hitter, w 6 K, reaching 88 (sat 85-86) & also went 3-4 w 3 R & 1 RBI. @PrepBaseballAL @PerfectGame_AL

@ALPreps As to the Private A class, did the AHSAA address whether it will keep its traditional approach of splitting the south regions and the north regions into separate playoff brackets, such that the Private A championship game is a north/south matchup?

AHSAA approved the football playoff structure for the next couple of years: 1A-5A will stay the same (8 regions, top 4 make it) 6A will change like was previously announced (4 regions, top 6 make it so 24 teams of 32 total) Private A will have 4 regions with 4 teams making playoffs for a 16-team playoff. Private AA will have 2 regions with 4 teams making playoffs for an 8-team playoff. Specific dates on all of this (and region seeding for each) are to come.

@coachzblair10 @TJHannam10 Some kids at 12 are studs only bc they’ve hit puberty early. As a result, not all of them go on to be studs in HS once puberty levels the playing field. That’s a separate issue than the one you raised, of course, but a notable one in the context of your reply. Good post.

@TJHannam10 That's the thing...all of these kids are studs, no denying that. Coaches and players are creating entitled monsters. These kids are kids...idc what they do in the bigs, you ain't a big leaguer yet!

Here we go again. Another over the top celebration at 12u. If you think this is good for baseball, you are the problem. Bat almost hits him in the face after the spike, then all the "look at me" antics, and you gotta love the cameraman on the field running with the kid. What a joke. It's all a show...🤦🏼‍♂️

With two strikes, everyone tends to focus on the wrong problem. Their answer: Two strike approach Two strike approach Two strike approach Then wonder why the K's don't go down. Here's what nobody asks: Why are you getting to two strikes in the first place? Ask better questions. Get better answers. Get better results. Save this for when you need it. Send this to someone who needs this.

Always grateful for the coverage of 2028 SS/OF/P @reidmcbride12 (Montgomery Academy, Montgomery, AL) by @ASharp24 and @PrepBaseballAL. They do a fantastic job covering high school baseball in Alabama - lots of good stuff at prepbaseballreport.com/alabama @ProspectWire @FiveTool @HallTechSports1 @aldotcompreps @mgmsports @AHSAAUpdates @ahsaaradio @D4Sharp @benthomaspreps @dennisvictory @dayjaeden12 @tagayle

Another spring look at SS/RHP Reid McBride (@ReidMcBride12, 2028). Athletic 6-2/180 frame continues stand out with strength present throughout. Swings with serious intent & impacts often. One of the top multi-sport athletes in the class as a TWP & QB on the gridiron. Montgomery Academy trails 8-4, B7. #ALHS26

This is a fantastic post. This gets to the heart of what REALLY matters at the plate.
Brandon@SwingAngryLLC

I think context matters. everyone loves talking about "seeing pitches" and long at-bats, but the only stat that actually matters is **runs scored**. A 10- or 11-pitch strikeout where the hitter took (or missed) good pitches to hit is still just an out. It doesn't become "quality" because they worked the count. Same with any other non-productive plate appearance. Run expectancy math backs this up: a strikeout typically costs a team ~0.25–0.30 runs on average (often more in key situations because it can't advance runners). A loud 100+ mph out might not score a run that inning either, but over time, **quality of contact** scales. Hitters who consistently barrel balls and produce hard contact see positive results and actual run creation more so than guys who just “grind out long at-bats” That said, a competitive ab that leads to getting on base is positive. "Seeing more pitches" as a team strategy has some marginal value (tiring starters, slightly higher walk rates), but studies show almost zero correlation between high pitches-per-plate-appearance and actual team runs scored or winning. High P/PA hitters often just end up walking more *or* striking out more — it doesn't magically turn them into better producers, most of the time they are missing good pitches to hit. the goal should be **selective aggression**: hunt pitches you can drive, stay ready to swing, and make the pitcher pay when he misses his spot. Teach barreling the ball and moving the offense — whether that's a hard single, a productive grounder, a sac fly, or even a well-timed walk. The kid who smokes the first-pitch mistake to the gap is developing the skill that actually translates and scores runs long-term. The 11-pitch "disciplined" K where he let meatballs go by? That's often just missing opportunities. So context definitely matters

Majors and minors players once thought that striding when you hit was most efficient and didn’t understand lead leg blocking when pitching. Things evolve. This one mechanic may or may not evolve as time passes, but my question was not bio-mechanically unsound: when you are in the air you physically cannot react. It was just a respectful question.

🚨 SF Giants Prep Steps • Land on the toes - ready to move • Hands + glove out in front • Eyes locked in on the hitter ⭐️ How consistent you can be w/ your preparation? Elite defenders know that the first pitch they take off will be the next ball hit their way.
