Let’s be honest about what really happened after that footage of Jesus’ statue being desecrated in Lebanon went viral. The Israeli soldier who did it will most likely walk free. There will be no real accountability. But suddenly, we saw panic in Israel because of how it would be perceived in the United States, especially among Christian evangelicals who have been Israel’s most loyal support base for decades. Israel is not worried about the left in the United States, as the left has always been more critical of colonialism and war. What really terrifies them is the possibility that their strongest pillar of support, the evangelical Christian right, starts to shift. And that is exactly why this incident triggered such a fast reaction, calls for investigation, and damage control. Think about the double standard. Tens of thousands of civilians killed, the majority women and children; no real investigations. Abuse of prisoners; no serious accountability. But one image that threatens their narrative among American Christians? Immediate response. And now add something else on top of this. You have Trump portraying himself in messianic imagery, attacking the Pope, and then this incident happens at the same time. For many Christians, this is becoming harder to ignore.

The Israelis targeted any movement around them and prevented the Red Cross and Civil Defense from approaching. An urgent appeal was made to the Lebanese Army, the International Committee of the Red Cross, and UNIFIL for their immediate intervention to rescue them and recover the bodies of the dead. As of now, Zeinab has been rescued by the Red Cross. Efforts are ongoing to extract Amal.
