No real progress was made in small cell lung cancer for almost four decades. Recent studies with new agents brought hope. Deciding what therapy for which patients still remains a challenge. A lifelong dream came true today. Almost exactly 25 years ago today, I lost my strong Marine father to small cell lung cancer. Lost and broken into a million pieces, I sought out Dr. John Minna as a teenager to learn how I could become a translational thoracic oncologist to study its science to help transform outcomes & treat patients afflicted by this same disease. Dr. Minna welcomed me with open arms, serving as my forever mentor and friend. After undergraduate at @TAMU, I completed my translational PhD in his lab at @utswcancer, before pursuing all my medical training to become a thoracic oncologist. It is my deepest honor today to have the legendary Dr. Minna come to @IUCancerCenter as a visiting professor, to hear all about our research in #SCLC, & visit @TheShieldsLab where we perform this science. 🧬 Surreal to come full circle, seeing my dream come to life, and having my lifelong mentor here meeting & mentoring my incredible team. #grateful @SclcSMASHERS @IU_Health @IUHemOnc @LUNGevity @LungCancerRx @lungoncdoc @LungAssociation @StephenVLiu @ASCO @AACR @heidi_onda
