The CIA is the most resourced intelligence operation on earth. It combines unmatched global reach with massive resources, advanced satellite and digital intelligence capabilities, and a deep operational history stretching back to the Cold War.  It has been involved in coups, assassinations, drone programs, and psychological operations across nearly every continent. It shares intelligence seamlessly with the UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand through the Five Eyes network a signals intelligence alliance that collectively surveils more of the world’s communications than any other partnership in existence. The CIA’s power is breadth. It is everywhere, always.
Mossad operates differently. Smaller, leaner, and surgically precise. Its ability to conduct covert operations including high-profile targeted eliminations continues to demonstrate operational superiority that larger agencies struggle to match. Its HUMINT capabilities are considered unmatched, with operatives skilled at embedding themselves inside adversarial nations and cultures for years before acting.  Mossad has hunted Nazi war criminals across continents, neutralized nuclear programs, and in 2024 pulled off one of the most audacious supply chain attacks in intelligence history rigging pagers carried by Hezbollah operatives in Lebanon to explode simultaneously. Despite being allies with the CIA, Mossad has been caught spying on the United States to gain strategic advantages.  That tells you everything about how it operates. No permanent friends. Only permanent objectives.
MI6 is the oldest on this list, founded in 1909, and its power lies in patience and placement. Its signature approach is placing undercover operatives in strategic positions for years sometimes decades gathering intelligence slowly but thoroughly.  It helped break the Enigma code in World War II, penetrated Soviet spy networks during the Cold War, and remains one of the most skilled human intelligence services on earth. It operates quietly, preferring depth over spectacle, and its partnership with GCHQ gives it a formidable digital surveillance arm that most people never hear about.
The FSB is what happens when a domestic intelligence agency is given the tools and mandate of a foreign one. It possesses an extensive network and significant operational flexibility aggressively safeguarding Russia’s interests both inside and far beyond its borders.  It is the direct successor to the KGB, and under Putin himself a former KGB officer it has carried that institutional DNA forward. Its alleged operations include the poisoning of dissidents on foreign soil, cyber warfare campaigns against Western democracies, and deep counterintelligence operations designed to identify and neutralize foreign agents operating inside Russia. The FSB’s power is intimidation and reach disguised as a domestic agency.
RAW was born out of military failure. After India’s intelligence shortcomings in the 1960s, it was created in 1968 with a singular focus never be caught off guard again in its own region. Its notable operations include a decisive role in the creation of Bangladesh in 1971, support for India’s first nuclear test, and outmaneuvering Pakistani intelligence during the Kargil War.  RAW’s power is deep regional expertise. It understands South Asia at a granular level that no outside agency can replicate, and within that geography it operates with a quiet dominance that rarely makes international headlines.
