Since I previously lived in Dubai and Peter has never even been here, I figured I’d provide some thoughts: 1. Does Dubai have elections? No. The UAE is a monarchy. There are pros and cons to most forms of government. In my experience the government here serves the people in a way other countries do not. 2. Is it illegal to be homosexual? Dubai has gay bars. Are gay people allowed to make out in the streets? No. Neither are straight people. 3. Can you criticise the government? Genuine and honest conversation is no problem. I’ve had such with local Emiratis and working class people alike. Everyone is here by choice because it’s a great place to live. 4. Can journalists criticise authorities? I don’t know, I’m not a journalist. You know who is? You are Peter. Why don’t you come here and see and then tell us instead of pontificating about a place you’ve never even been. 5. Is there freedom of assembly? Assembly for what reason? I attended a yoga event with more than 5k people. They probably had a permit, as is required in most countries. If you’re referring to BLM style mobs, no, it’s not. And IMO society is better for it. Why should the rights of an angry mob outweigh my personal safety? 6. Do women have equal rights? Yes. See previous post. 7. What employment rights exist for migrants? How do you define a migrant? People from all over the world come to Dubai to better their lives and in many cases the lives of their entire families. Does that look the same for everyone? Of course not. “A better life” depends greatly on where you’ve started. Lastly I will say that I have spent a lot of time in authoritarian countries. There’s a feeling of oppression in the air. You can sense fear when you interact with people. Locals are not encouraged to go out and experience the rest of the world, it’s discouraged. None of that is true here. Come to Dubai habibi, see for yourself.
