@tribelaw Netanyahu has determined that a "2 state solution " will not be considered while he is PM. While Hamas and Hezbollah exist, (and they appear to show no sign of going away) he will continue in power, and a permanent deal will be impossible.

@therussellshaw I knew Jana for more than 50 years. She taught me how to write news. We had many conversations when I was driving to Phx every day to cover the Symington trial. We lost touch after that but we’d occasionally bump into each other and it was a joyous time. What a great lady.

this is very sad news that we knew was coming. Jana had been moved to hospice about 10 days ago. I have known her for almost 50 years. She was a lovely person and I’m crying as I write this. We ate dinner together many many times. Sometimes at her house, sometimes at mine. Usually at Krista Griffin’s. Love to you old friend ❤️ azcentral.com/story/news/loc…

Why does no one mention who revised the student loan system back in 2007, when the banks needed resuscitation (mortgage crisis) so wanted OUT of providing Fed student loans. Things were reworked: - Banks only administered loans it freed from the responsibility of them bc the US Gov (taxpayers) were put as securing loans. - The Gov did not define parameters (ie interest) for these loans, so they varied widely. - There was not a formula for defaulting debts for nonpayment. Banks were not incentivized to cancel them bc interest kept accruing. It didn’t seem like the loaner (ostensibly the IS govt and banks were effectively connected, so these gaps became places where the loans became too burdensome with no exit ramp. - The schools had no incentive to reign in costs since these were Gov backed loans. If the prices had no oversight, so kept creeping upward. A student considering a loan was dealing with a sort of price fixing situation - no oversight, no brakes, no conditions placed to control costs (the ultimate grift, usually the purview of local government, but now handed on a platter to the schools). While it was intended as a way to be helpful to students needing education loans, its design did not have guardrails for the protection of the loan holders or the tax payers. And the banks were seduced bc there was no downside to them for these loans, so they were not scrutinized as say a car or house loan might be. Its design was a disaster doomed to self destruct- and so it has, while the Designer (Biden) buys votes using relief of these truly bad instruments creating hostility from an overtaxed, over inflated taxpaying public. PLEASE, let’s give credit where credit is due and not let him squirm away as merely a sugar daddy. But he holds responsibility for the creation of this and lack of vision to see its failings when instituted. It’s not rocket science science, just economics.

NBC’s @PeterAlexander: “You opened today’s briefing by talking about the latest student loan cancelations for, I think, we said — what did we say — in total, 4.75 million Americans.” KJP: “Yeah, yeah.” Alexander: “Now, I think it's 160,000, this latest round. Mike Johnson, the Republican House speaker today described this as a massive wealth transfer for Americans who did not attend college to those who did — and he described it as a shameful play to buy more votes, six months before an election?” KJP: “I will say to the congressional member Mike Johnson — obviously, the speaker — is that what is shameful is that Republicans continue to get in the way of helping us deliver a little bit of breathing room for Americans who deserve that opportunity — who deserve you — heard me talk about — uh — uh — about Tiffany, the young woman who — who — um — one of the things that people should know and if — if you don't is that when folks are — are receiving these — these — um — debt relief — uh — uh — announcements from President, they have an opportunity to tell their story. They have an opportunity to — to say why this matters to them and we're talking about millions of Americans who now have an opportunity to start a life, have an opportunity to move forward in a way that where they can reach that American Dream or reach whatever it is that they wanted to do not just for themselves for — for — for them for their families, so we believe — and the President is not going to walk away from doing that. He believes it's an important commitment that he made to — to Americans. It is a broken system. It is a broken system.”

Justice Barrett told us what “message Americans should take home” from today’s ruling that, even if Trump’s role in the insurrection we just barely survived disqualifies him under the Constitution from ever holding office again, only congressional legislation under Sec 5 of the 14th Amendment can implement that absolutely vital ban. The message Barrett tells us to “take home” from that fiat is that we should just chill because all 9 justices agreed that Colorado overstepped what any one state should’ve been able to do. I’ll discuss that point later, but for now I’d stress what Justices Sotomayor, Kagan, and Jackson rightly reminded Justice Barrett and Chief Justice Roberts about: as Roberts rightly wrote in Dobbs, the Court should avoid deciding any more than it needs to decide when ruling on a case. To reach out and resolve in advance all sorts of issues that might arise in the future is to take on the role of a super-legislature, not a court of law.

The obituary for my grandfather Emery Brown ran in the Arizona Republic yesterday, a paper he read cover-to-cover every single day. He also read the Gazette in the evening when it existed. A monumental figure in my life who I am deeply grateful for and miss dearly. Rest in Peace.

@jeremyduda Castro went off to Argentina, Bolin died 3 months into Govs office and Babbitt became Gov. He beat Ev Mecham in fall race by 43,000 votes. This is from memory so it could be a bit muddled but I think it’s right. I was with KOOL TV at the time.

In March 1978, Bolin was governor after succeeding Castro, Rose Mofford was secretary of state and Babbitt was still AG. Bolin's death elevated Babbitt to AG, and he appointed Jack LaSota, a Republican, as his successor.

This will be the first time since 1978 that Dems have held the governor's office, secretary of state's office and AG's office. Raul Castro, Wes Bolin and Bruce Babbitt, respectively, were elected to those offices in 1974.
