I am concerned that the historic LNER boundary stone at Grade II* listed York Station is not being looked after as part of the redevelopment works. I am told it has been removed. I hope @LNER @CityofYork and Sisk Construction will ensure it is reinstated in its original place.

If you are thinking “I would quite like doing that job” then you would absolutely love it and you should apply for it without delay (take it from one who knows). Also your colleagues/manager etc will be very nice. And did I mention helping non-profits make people’s lives better?

Thank you to @danielhwright for speaking at the annual Scottish meeting of our Advisory Panel. He spoke on the value of ‘small heritage’ - the sort of things that can get ‘tidied up’ or lost but which give our stations character. Here ‘s an example of a survivor @NetworkRailGLC

Helicopter ahoy, then Daniel?
Daniel Wright@danielhwright

In Hoy, #Orkney today, and treated to the sight of some spectacular precision flying in the hills and corries by this @HMCoastguard helicopter. Not sure if it was an exercise or they were looking for someone/something but it was very impressive stuff.

@danielhwright @CommunityRail @CommRailWales Yes a bit untidy! I didn't see the lettering... well actually didn't see the surface of the platforms very much as it was very busy due to passengers delayed by storms and bank holidays!

Here is Stromness telephone exchange, which occupies half a building shared with the Royal Mail delivery office (I assume because of their shared history in the GPO).

Having been to a recent talk by @tele_exchange I have become very aware that many telephone exchange buildings might not be with us for too much longer. So here is Petersfield exchanged, just in case it vanishes.

@RailwayHeritage There is a real issue with Network Rail’s speed at agreeing leases/disposals of buildings it doesn’t need. I lost a couple of community projects to reuse redundant railway buildings for just that reason. The people at NR ‘get it’ but the processes don’t support them, I think.

@Psythor Operators/NR have quite a lot of freedom to make changes to e.g. stations under general permitted development, but frequently apply for planning permission anyway “to be good neighbours” as it was put to me once. So a great idea but no use if the railway doesn’t take advantage.

A quick win for the government would be to basically abolish planning restrictions on building 5G infrastructure to serve railway lines. Only a limited geography affected, but millions more productive journeys. And people will be too distracted to complain about trains being bad.
Peter Foster@pmdfoster

No plugs. No tables and, most of time, no WiFi. This is a Thameslink train. It serves as main link between London and Brighton/Cambridge. Prime commuter line. 000s of wasted hours. It’s like the UK is *built* for low-productivity. The worst kind of penny-pinching procurement.

First visit of the day to Wellington, Shropshire to meet @WestMidRailway to discuss ways to improve the station. Said hello to the Friends of Wellington Station and admired their Secret Garden. Beautiful old entrance gate.

@GarethDennis A long time ago I was at a rail industry journalists dinner at which a TOC MD was pondering a letter of support for beleaguered transport sec Stephen Byers. I told them not to touch the idea with a bargepole (he got the boot a week later). I would have suggested the same here!

If I wanted my organisation to look like it was part of the future or knew anything about what the future needed to look like, I would simply avoid sponsoring an event for the party that's spent a decade and a half destroying that future and was just electorally decimated for it.

ICYMI last week, I’ve written a book about the British Rail symbol; there’s really something in it for everyone; students and practitioners of graphic design, art and design historians, lovers of twentieth century modernism, transport aficionados, and, of course, anoraks like me!

In his new book 'Arrows of desire', Nick Job @_doublearrow takes a long look at the revered British Rail symbol. It is making something of a comeback although, in truth, it never really went away. You can pre-order your copy now. buff.ly/3Sx8QGu
