@StephNass Yes it’s a combination of strategies, ie concentrated + diversified = hybrid. Types can be based on partners’ beliefs

My new theory: there are 5 types of VC firms.
1️⃣ Thesis-driven: You have deep industry expertise and invest in deals that fit your market vision. Typical for emerging managers. Example: Datapower Ventures.
2️⃣ Brand-driven: You have a strong brand and attract proven founders. Typical for established, generalist funds. Example: A16Z.
3️⃣ Lead-driven: You co-invest in rounds led by tier-1 firms and try to replicate their performance. Example: SyndicateRoom.
4️⃣ Mission-driven: You seek an edge with founders & LPs by "doing good" and investing in underrepresented founders (e.g. Geek Ventures, Matr Ventures) or tech for good (mostly cleantech).
5️⃣ Volume-driven: You play the numbers - you invest a high number of small checks and mathematically expect to capture a few unicorns in the lot. Example: 500Global.
Agree? Disagree?
(NB: Those 5 strategies are not exclusive. The larger funds eventually combine a few strategies.)

@StephNass Games are tough. They’re essentially not solving any problems. It’s all about trends and GTM
