. “If You Had 1 Acre Today, What Would You Do With It?”
Someone once asked me a simple but powerful question: “If I gave you just 1 acre of land today, what would you do with it?” I didn’t answer immediately because the truth is most of us spend so much time dreaming about owning land but we rarely think deeply about how to actually use it well. We assume once we have land, everything else will figure itself out but that’s not how it works.
Many people if given that 1 acre would rush into the usual routine. They would plant maize or beans wait for the season, harvest, sell and repeat the same cycle. It feels safe because it’s what everyone else is doing. But over time, that approach keeps people busy without really moving them forward. The land is working, yes but it’s not necessarily working for them.
The reality is that 1 acre is not small. If approached with the right mindset it is enough to build a steady and reliable source of income. The difference comes in how you think about it. Instead of seeing it as just a piece of land for growing crops you begin to see it as a business that must generate returns regularly not just once in a season.
If I had 1 acre today, I would plan it intentionally. I would combine crops that bring in quick income like vegetables that can be harvested weekly with longer-term investments like coffee or fruit trees that build value over time. I would also integrate small livestock not just for additional income but to support the system with manure and reduce costs. Every section of that land would serve a purpose and every activity would be tied to a clear income strategy.
Because the more you observe the more you realize that in Uganda, growing crops is not the biggest challenge. The soil is fertile, and the climate is favorable. Things grow. But turning that growth into consistent and meaningful income that is where many people struggle.
We plant without a clear market in mind, we follow trends without understanding them and we wait for harvest without a real financial plan.
What if we changed that approach? What if before planting anything, we first asked ourselves who we are producing for, how often we expect to earn from the land and how we can make that income more consistent? That shift in thinking is what transforms a small piece of land into a real opportunity.
So the question still stands and I’ll ask you again: if you were given just 1 acre of land today what would you do with it?
Am waiting for your answers I know they can help someone out there with a plan for their land
For God and my country

Rest well, Allan Ssekamate. You were my calm, humble boss at @DailyMonitor in 2000. Later, when @RedPepperUG went daily in 2005, you graciously accepted my call to lead the sports desk as my junior. A true professional and a class act.
Requiescat in Pace.

@AmanzWillieONE @EUinUG @JanSadek Where can farmers access certified seedlings? And how well does it perform in Eastern Uganda especially Tororo, given soil and rainfall conditions?
Worth investing, but location suitability is key.

I’ve spent the last 8 months in the cocoa export space, facilitating and watching tonnes of beans leave our country and for about 6 months , it felt like progress. Containers moving, deals closing, numbers growing. But the more you sit in that space, the more one question refuses to leave your mind where is the real value going?
Because it’s not staying with us.
We do the hard part. We grow the cocoa, we harvest, we ferment, we dry… and then we export it. Somewhere else, that same cocoa becomes chocolate bars, cocoa powder, cosmetics, brands products that sell for many times what we earned from the raw beans. That gap is where the real opportunity is and it’s the gap we’ve normalized for too long.
When you look at the coffee sector, you start to see a different story emerging. People like @JackieAkampwera of @JadaCoffee and brands like @volcanocoffee1 Coffee led by @GKatabazi , @harvestrumEdge Coffee and @KBarigye made a decision not to stop at the farm gate. They went further into roasting, branding, packaging and building experiences people are willing to pay for. That shift is changing everything in the coffee sector . It created jobs, built identity and most importantly retained value.
And I keep asking myself why not cocoa?
This is where I am now. After working in exports, I’m turning part of my time and capital to domestic cocoa value addition. Not as an idea but as something practical we can start building immediately. It won’t be perfect. It won’t be big at the start. But it will be ours.
I’m looking for young people who are ready to step into this space food scientists who understand processing, creatives who can shape products and anyone willing to invest time, skill or resources into building something meaningful.
The plan is : I start by providing about 5tns of cocoa to the team for trial purposes , we learn by doing, we refine the process and we grow from there.
Because this is bigger than just a business idea. It’s about shifting how we think. We cannot keep exporting raw potential and importing finished success. We’ve seen what is possible with coffee. Now it’s time to do the same or even better with cocoa.
If you’ve been waiting for a sign to build something real this might be it. Let’s create value where it starts.
For God and my country

@willpower243 @Muganzisecure The cocoa journey began on 25/03/2026 in Tororo. An integrated farm of cocoa, bananas, cassava, maize, soybeans, and shade trees is now underway. I’ll document this journey over the years ahead as we work toward our first harvest
