@JoshDaws Broadly agree, still get a fair bit of fear/spiritual oddity from people that can’t see past the slop factory caricature.

@grimmley IRL everyone is amazed by AI except the teachers. I don’t encounter nearly as much hate as I do on X.

The doomers are in full meltdown over AI. Sam Altman paid $10k to preserve his brain after death. The catch is he has to be euthanized first. The man who says we are past the event horizon of digital superintelligence has decided to solve death by killing himself. But the real story is bigger than one tech CEO's transhumanism. There is an entire industry — left and populist right — incentivized to keep you afraid of the most powerful tool man has ever built. AI is not the apocalypse, and it's not the messiah. Conservatives have been reflexively retreating from cultural and technological arenas for decades, and it has cost us enormously. We can’t let that happen with AI. The short-term disruption might be painful. But in the medium and long term, AI could be the most powerful tool for human flourishing ever devised. Take heart: Christ is King, and He hasn't lost the plot. Now let's build: youtube.com/watch?v=MzEY6Q…

One week of groceries for a family. Nothing extravagant. Just the bare bones in a blue state. I stay home. My husband only leaves the house to work. We have cancelled vacations. Taken our children out of extracurricular activities. Cancelled our gym membership’s. We do not go out to restaurants frequently. I’m wearing the same old clothes that I have for years and I need socks and underwear, but that will have to, I guess, never happen. @RFKJr_Official @POTUS @JDVance HELP!

@JoshDaws I think I broadly agree, but also there’s nothing new under the sun, so is anything ever all that unique?

This is the right perspective on AI.

The CEO of Take-Two, the company behind GTA, just said something the entire AI industry doesn't want to hear. And he said it without being anti-AI. Strauss Zelnick's argument is precise. AI is built on datasets. Datasets are backward-looking. Creativity is forward-looking. A model trained on everything that already exists cannot, by definition, produce something genuinely unexpected. And all hits, by their very nature, are unexpected. Asset creation and hit creation are not the same thing. AI is getting very good at the first one. The second one is what actually makes money, builds franchises, and changes culture. Nobody has shown AI can do that yet. The derivative property problem is real. You can clone GTA with existing technology. You could do it before AI. It would take 3 years and look identical. It still wouldn't sell. Because it isn't GTA. It's a clone of GTA. And consumers, despite what the industry occasionally pretends, can feel the difference between something genuinely new and something assembled from the residue of things that already worked. Thousands of mobile games ship every year. 0 to 5 hits get made. The same studios make them every time. The technology to make more games has been commoditized for years. It didn't democratize hit creation. It just flooded the market with more forgettable product. The Silicon Valley thesis that AI unlocks game creation for everyone is true in the same way that cheap cameras unlocked filmmaking for everyone. They did. And the same 5 studios still make the movies everyone watches. What Zelnick is saying, without quite saying it, is that the thing AI cannot replicate is taste. The instinct for what hasn't been done yet. The cultural antenna that detects the gap in the market before the data can see it. Data tells you what people wanted. Hits tell people what they want next. Those are different jobs.

What’s cool about both the Republican and Democratic parties is that each one only has like two good candidates and neither party ever runs any of them.

@IAGovernor E15 is terrible. Ethanol is bad for engines and it has less energy potential than gasoline. It needs to be much cheaper to make it worth it on energy alone.

Anyone who thinks "AI = easy mode" honestly just sounds dumb and out of touch. For context, I’ve been doing product design for 20+ years, including giant brands like Febreze, Swiffer, and Abercrombie with multi-continent supply chains etc. I can tell you that AI is by FAR the most technically and cognitively demanding thing I’ve done in my career. Yes plenty of people use it to make videos of Charlie Sheen farting on Pikachu or whatever but using AI tools at a high level is HARD. It makes production a lot easier and faster (eg, writing code or generating images) but the cognitive part (deciding what code should be written or what image should be generated) is just as slow and hard as ever, so your brain is now the bottleneck.

Today, as NASA prepares for its Artemis II mission, claims that we never went to the moon are everywhere. So, I asked astrophysicist @RTB_HRoss if there's any proof that we did go: “There’s now three laser reflectors on the moon. Physicists beam laser beams off them every single day. Because of those laser reflectors that the Apollo astronauts put on the moon, we’re able to test theories of gravity to a degree that we’ve never been able to do before. So somebody put those laser reflectors there.”
