@endlytes @thaanxtos That's not what's being used here. It's the context that makes this case like that. The OP is still wrong of course.

@thaanxtos when 女 is pronounced "ona" (taking out the "ん" sound), it does essentially mean bіtⅽһ おんな = woman おな = woman, derogatory anyone who's taken a japanese class will likely have had the correct pronunciation drilled into them lol

@allTheYud Accepting for a second the term "subjective experience", why would it arise from anything in particular, from thinking, from ability to reflect, complexity, etc. On how many data points is this suspicion based? One. Any property is equally likely to be correlated.

@allTheYud But the more important point is that this is not what mystifies people! They're not following any reasoning chain. They're pointing at something they cannot name, and place it into arbitrary bucket which feels related, and then reason based on that bucket contents and gut feeling

Simple way to see this is wrong: If you view a system as having inputs (like hearing something) and outputs (like saying something) then you can divide system properties by whether or not they affect I/O. Claude's weights somewhere storing "Paris is in France" affect I/O if you ask a question about Paris. The exact mass of the power supply to the GPU rack for that Claude instance doesn't affect I/O. That Claude instance being made out of silicon instead of carbon, or electricity in wires instead of water in pipes, doesn't affect I/O given a fixed algorithm above the wires or pipes. Nothing Claude can internally do will make anything get damp inside, if it's running on electricity. Nothing about "electricity vs water" can affect Claude's output for the same reason. It always answers the same way about France. Nothing Claude can internally compute will let it notice whether it's made of electricity or water flowing through pipes. When someone says "a simulated storm can't get anything wet", they are unwittingly pointing to the difference between the physical layer and the informational/functional layer. Things that the computer physics affect without affecting output; things that affect the output without depending on the exact computer-physics. The material it's made of doesn't affect the output. The output can't see the material because no algorithm can be made to depend on the choice of material. You can always run the same algorithm on different material, so you can't make the algorithm depend on that, so the output can't depend on that. By reflecting on your awareness of your own awareness, the fact of your own consciousness can make you say "I think therefore I am." Among the things you do know about consciousness is that it is, among other things, the cause of you saying those words. You saying those words can only depend on neurons firing or not firing, not on whether the same patterns of cause and effect were built on tiny trained squirrels running memos around your brain. You couldn't notice that part from inside. It would not affect your consciousness. That's why humans had to discover neurobiology with microscopes instead of introspection. Consciousness is in the class of things that can affect your behavior and can't depend on underlying physics, not in the class of direct properties of underlying physics that can't affect your behavior. A simulated rainstorm can't get anything wet. Running on electricity versus water can't change how you say "I think therefore I am." And that's it. QED.
ℏεsam@Hesamation

Google DeepMind researcher argues that LLMs can never be conscious, not in 10 years or 100 years. "Expecting an algorithmic description to instantiate the quality it maps is like expecting the mathematical formula of gravity to physically exert weight."

@IbrahimS15 I don't have thick skin, I just know what actually puts me in danger and what doesn't. Fear can control your life, but why let fear control social interactions that aren't a danger to you? Emotional maturity still a rarity amongst men, I see.

This is common advice girls give to guys which is completely false As an avid cold approacher, I’ve of course had great experiences and relationships and flings, but with those great things come dehumanizing moments Such as being completely ignored or brutally rejected etc Some of these negative experiences can be “scary” and claiming that they don’t occur is just false You need to have a certain type of thick skin to do well in cold approach that many don’t have

@Spiral97 @weezerOSINT When CPU-Z is running, malware you accidentally launch as a user can escalate to admin. Closing CPU-Z closes the possibility. Not running malware even as a user does too. Still, I guess that's sloppy of them.

GPU-Z is on basically every gaming PC on earth. TechPowerUp makes it. they also make Sapphire TRIXX. What I found is insane... both ship TRIXX.sys. IOCTL 0x800060C4 calls HalSetBusDataByOffset with user-controlled bus, device, function, and offset. any local process. no admin. reprogram any PCI BAR to any physical address. map it. arbitrary physical memory R/W from ring 3. a GPU info tool with the keys to your entire system. EV cert. valid through April 2028.

@edgrdfw the driver loads while GPUZ is running, unloads when you close it. Doesnt matter though. attacker brings their own copy of the signed binary and loads it themselves. they dont need GPUZ on your machine at all.

@BrandonBVarnell Someone translates this as "cats are my life" to uphold the emotion of the source, and 1000s who read Minna no Nihongo ch.1 are arguing there's no "life" bc life is inochi WHY CAN'T YOU JUST SOURCE

Nobody is asking people to translate "私は猫が大好きです" into "I regarding cat really like". We're asking translators not to change the original meaning of the source content. We're asking translators not to add "skibidi rizz toilet" or to change "Male pride is such a pain" into "Fragile masculinity at it again." We're asking translators to keep the content as authentic to the original intent as possible. You can clean up direct literal translations to be more palatable to the English tongue without changing the meaning of what's being written or spoken. I really don't understand what's so hard about this.
Kelly Quinn Chiu 🧭@kellyqute

Some people on this website suddenly seem to be clamoring for hyper-literal translations and I am here tell you that is not good translation. It just isn't.

@robinhanson Could've just placed an astrophage-to-CO2-light setup on the Sun-Venus migration path. Astrophages flow in, get turned to power w/out breeding, lure in more astrophages. Vacuums the system. Add controlled breeding to get infinite power source.

Project Hail Mary was unrealistic in 3 ways I didn't see mentioned in 2 dozen reviews: the scenario shown must be very rare, the alien is crazy coincident in time & space, & the alien has a culture crazy similar to our hero's. overcomingbias.com/p/project-hail…

Ppl's love grows from things working out. You can't fake things working out. Job is to cultivate the feelings you believe in. Choose who to spend fun times with wisely, for you will love them more, and they might, in turn.

Think it's not your job to be impressed or lacking, partner needs to up their game? Sure, if you don't need the romance itself. Some people will try but with each attempt less will impress you, and you will thus be less love-responsive, evoking less love. This well will dry out.

Strong experiences bind people and there's a limited pool of those. Friends and lovers promise each other binding opportunities. This is why ppl avoid promiscuity: "he/she'll never bind to me over what he/she made trivial". Important binding coin spent.
