For decades, Ireland's MAGDALENE LAUNDRIES – run by Catholic orders with full state knowledge – imprisoned up to 30,000 women and girls. Labeled "fallen" for being pregnant outside marriage, abused, orphaned or simply "difficult", they were forced into unpaid slave labour in commercial laundries, often for life. Beatings, humiliation, stolen names, mass graves.
This wasn't ancient history – the last one closed in 1996. Survivors continue fighting for full justice, proper memorials and recognition. Recent developments include the 2025 documentary Testimony, which highlights ongoing campaigns for accountability, as well as debates over sites like the former Sean McDermott Street laundry (now planned as a national remembrance centre) and protests against redevelopment plans.

Demanded that the FCC require TV shows to depict large families in a negative light, so that parents with multiple children would be shamed and ostracized by society.
Proposed forcibly sterilizing millions of Americans by poisoning the water supply to make them infertile. He couldn’t think of a drug to do it “safely,” but wanted to do it anyway.
Supported actual forced sterilization campaigns in India and China, where millions of people
Warned that population growth would lead to starvation, but also proposed cutting off food aid to “overpopulated” countries to reduce their populations… by starvation.
