Life update: I'm joining @ycombinator as Visiting Partner 🤩 Software ate the world, and now AI is eating software — the founders building in this shift will redefine how we compute, work, and live. In my new role, I'm excited to find those founders and help them build the iconic startups of this generation. YC backed me when I founded Cron Inc. in 2019, and I'm grateful to come full circle and pay it forward. I'll start reading applications in October, interviewing founders in November, and then pack my battered suitcase in January for the W26 batch 🔥 Follow along here & see you in SF!

We have pretty forgiving laws actually, Most of economy is very reliant on the housing market, so it makes sense. we just passed a no-consent minor dwelling law, and detached buildings under a certain sqm footprint aren't questioned if my understanding is correct (not my domain of expertise)

Everyone makes fun of Eight Sleep until it's 84º in SF and they don't have a liquid-cooled mattress. Suckers.

@Dynastus How does zoning work in NZ? Is all of your land zoned to build on? Or only where the house stands?

@raphaelschaad Interesting issue. It really depends on your resources and ties to the location. Not something I feel particularly equipped to give a definitive answer to at this point in time. "What you can with what you have" comes to mind.

I find these local business card/ads super inspiring. Basic graphics that make perfect sense, no fancy layout techniques or unnecessary color, typography people can relate to, no marketing language, very dense with information, just the clear facts. No exaggerations. No "I'm not sure I get what they do" feelings. I know exactly what they do. I know exactly how to get in touch with them. I even know their first names. This is 100x better than just about every modern web site. Designers can learn a lot from this not-designed-by-a-designer design. It's outstanding. Bravo.

@Dynastus I'm Swiss. New Zealand is roughly 6.5 times larger in land area than Switzerland, while Switzerland has a significantly higher population density and a larger total population. Any recommendations for people that are considering countries that don't have abundant country-side?

god damn manhattan steals your sleep in ways you don’t fully appreciate until you’re somewhere quiet. the noise is actually physiologically adversarial. the damn ambulance sirens are engineered to bypass habituation & your nervous system can’t ignore them because it’s not supposed to. instead i have been waking up to birds lately & it’s the exact inverse. the dawn chorus acts like an evolutionary safety signal. your brain reads it as “all clear.” you rise instead of jolt. the city that never sleeps is actually a huge warning sign.

@raphaelschaad @nvs you think metacognitive skills are innate? i was thinking they come, initially, from those around you

I actually think it sounds awful, and I have mentioned to Brian as much. I don’t want to sleep on a cold mattress (cold coming from your back), I want to sleep in a room with cool air. I’ve tried 8Sleep (older generations that supposedly have fixed my LED and noise complaints) but the fundamental design of the old coming from the back is just a nonstarter for me. I’m happy for all the happy customers, tho! Specially Brian <3 But my plan is to build central air (super quiet) into my dream house — even if it were in Europe where this might be harder to pull off from a regulatory and supply perspective. Nothing like somewhat constant air temp (lower in bedrooms, higher in living areas) year around. I say somewhat because I do t mind putting on a sweater in the winter etc.

@brian_lovin Sounds absolutely lovely. I was kind of close to buying one but ultimately felt like I couldn’t support a business like that

@tommoor @brian_lovin That’s funny in two ways. The obvious topical one, and then the departure to its current name.

Using Cursor again today for the first time in a while. Still using Claude Code, Codex, Conductor, of course. First: someone needs to rename because the C-named companies are out of control. Second: fast is good. Composer 2 is good because it's fast. That's all you need to know to at least give it a try. Third: I am grateful that I can switch between all of these tools in an instant. Little-to-no lock in. I pick the thing that gives me the most intelligence-per-second-per-dollar and am happy.

@GetMentalWealth @nvs Most likely. Great support system and no learning stalls out. Learning will lead you to support system, if that is the unlock.
