They've built their entire picture of the country from second-hand sources, often from people in the same position. Yet when those of us who actually live here, who have Chinese colleagues, neighbours and friends across the country, describe what we see, they call us liars and tell us what China is "really like." That's not scepticism. That's either brainwashing so complete the subject doesn't even notice it, or it's a paid job to keep regurgitating the same rubbish. Either way, they've been handed a narrative and they protect it from any evidence that contradicts it, including the lived experience of people on the ground. Worth remembering next time one of them shares a recycled claiming it as fact.

But figures like JD Vance have moved Trump into a very weak and deeply unpopular position. There is still hope that President Trump can come back to strength. But JD Vance and everyone pushing this direction have betrayed the American people, betrayed the ideals we both believe in, and betrayed the historic chance to finally rid the world of the Islamic Republic.
