@jonfavs @mehdirhasan These simply arent mutually exclusive. People can be feeling the squeeze because of decades of neoliberal economics (as well as lifestyle choices, i suspect), then be convinced to assign that blame to an administration that was actually moving things in the correct direction.

Partisan Trump fans will say this, sure. That does not even come close to explaining the depth of people's frustrations with inflation. 75% of voters said inflation has caused them severe or moderate hardship in the last year. Most are not Trump fans. Most do not consume right-wing media.

@TheMildWorld @beatmastermatt is it "manipulated" or "inaccurate" ? You havent provided better sources, or said what the magnitude of the effects would be on the data thats out there based on your issues with how its collected. There is no perfect data source, but theres a good chance these are "less wrong"

I didn't say "Fake News" Just manipulated data. The FBI crime stats the MSM cites is missing a lot of data. Inflation is gauged through the CPI. Ever take a look at how CPI is calculated and what's excluded? And we don't talk enough about CPBOne App processing through airports. It's not "Fake" news, it's just news that the Mainstream media doesn't talk about because it doesn't "fit the narrative"

@firebornnn We live in two realities, and more Americans chose to believe in the less credible reality. Future historians might call this the Misinformation Age, a time when people can easily cherry pick evidence to back up their beliefs and values and straw man their opponents.

All I can think about is how throughout all of human history no messages have been more effective at amassing power than "the other side looks down on you" and "outsiders are ruining your way of life." No rational arguments seem to penetrate them

I will die on this one: pay is the single largest gatekeeper we have in academia. This crap isn’t viable. It’s hurting people, and limiting the pool of talented folks that think it’s a good idea to do science or have the resources to do so.
