4 feiten die in het Nakba-debat structureel ontbreken: 1) 1948 was een oorlog, geen vacuüm. De vluchtelingencrisis ontstond in een overlevingsoorlog nadat Arabische legers de pas uitgeroepen Joodse staat aanvielen. 2) De Nakba was niet onvermijdelijk. De Arabische zijde wees het VN-verdelingsplan af. Acceptatie had oorlog en vluchtelingencrisis kunnen voorkomen. 3) Het verhaal is complexer dan “Israël verdreef iedereen”. Een deel vluchtte uit angst, chaos of na expliciete oproepen van Arabische leiders om tijdelijk te vertrekken in afwachting van Arabische overwinning. 4) Er was ook een Joodse vluchtelingencrisis. Ruim 850.000 Joden vluchtten/werden verdreven uit Arabische landen, geïntegreerd in Israël, maar werden geïntegreerd, niet generaties lang in vluchtelingenkampen gehouden.

Israel celebrates Yom Ha'atzmaut (Independence Day) today. On May 14 1948, Israel declared independence, 8h before the termination of the British Mandate for Palestine Egypt, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Iraq, Saudi, Yemen & Morocco attacked Israel the next day but lost the Arab-Israeli War, which came to an end on March 10th 1949. Egypt had pulled out of the fighting on January 7th after an Israeli offensive into the Sinai Peninsula. This video isn’t 100% exact in the details but gives a good overview of the course of battles.

You can hear the shutter on the Nikon as @Astro_Christina is hammering away on 3-shot brackets and capturing those exceptional Earthset photos through the 400mm lens. @AstroVicGlover was in window 3 watching with @Astro_Jeremy next to him. I could barely see the Moon through the docking hatch window but the iPhone was the perfect size to catch the view…this is uncropped, uncut with 8x zoom which is quite comparable to the view of the human eye.
