A humanitarian catastrophe is unfolding in Russian-occupied Oleshky, Kherson region. A Russian war crime on a massive scale. Those poor people... Russia is effectively keeping the city under blockade: without fuel, electricity, medicine, and food. About 2,000 people currently remain in the city, including fifty children. "There is no food supply or evacuation. People are faced with a terrible choice: to wait for death by starvation or to walk miles along mined roads in search of a piece of bread, at the risk of shelling," head of Kherson military administration said in an interview with Meidas Defense. Civilians have to walk 50 kilometers to Skadovsk, the regional center, to get provisions, apply for social assistance, receive pensions, etc., because none of these services is available in Oleshky. Getting in and out of the city by vehicle is next to impossible. All transport moving along the road, referred to as "The Road of Death," is targeted by drones and shelling. Even if supplies are delivered, they rarely reach people, as Russian soldiers take up to 80% of deliveries and also steal from locals. The situation is further complicated by the collapse of the water supply. The last time Russia installed water tanks was in 2024. Now, only those living in private houses can access well water, which is not tested for safety, while others rely on melted snow during the winter. Due to the collapse of food and medical access, two or three deaths are reported daily, according to Tetiana Hasanenko, head of the Oleshky city military administration. The hospital is treating only Russian military personnel, she says. The causes of death include malnutrition, heart attacks, traumatic amputations, blood loss, and hypothermia amid a severe winter and a prolonged heating crisis. What if I told you that for decades, this was largely a U.S. policy -- that Europe largerly disarmed, weakened its defense industries, and handed its security over to the United States, making itself dependent? What if I told you that for decades, this arrangement suited both sides just fine? America secured its monopoly status as the world's military hegemon and the undisputed leader of the West, gained the ability to project its power across the globe, and had a massive market for its defense industry free from European competition -- all while extending its protection over its vassals-allies in return. And Europe was perfectly happy to relax under that American umbrella and spend its money on social programs and comfortable life. Today in Oleshky, nearly two thousand people — including fifty children — are forced to choose between starving to death or walking dozens of kilometers along mined roads under constant threat of shelling, just to find a piece of bread. Every day in this temporarily Russian-occupied city in Kherson region, two to three people die from malnutrition, heart attacks, and Russian shelling. There was also a recent case where occupiers killed an elderly man who tried to stop them from looting food supplies. This horrifyingly resembles the Holodomor of 1932–1933. People have no food, no medicine, no fuel, and no electricity. In 2026, innocent civilians are being forced to choose between death by hunger and death by bullet. Hello, I'm Artemko. I'll be 19 months old forever now. I was killed at my home in Kryvyi Rih when a russian missile hit the building. My mummy and daddy were with me. They are gone too, and so is the lady next door. Another man from our building died in hospital a few days later. Our apartment isn't there any more, and neither are any of the apartments round our stairwell. My parents had two children: me and my older brother Maksym. When my mummy and daddy found out that I was going to be born soon, they were very happy. But Maksym was really jealous. All that changed when I was brought home from the hospital, and my brother became my best friend! If my parents needed help, he could look after me or play with me. That was especially useful when the three of us – my brother, Mummy and me – were living abroad. We moved there for a while to get away from the war. I was very little then, about a year old. My daddy was waiting for us at home. I just adored him when I came back! Of course, I loved my mummy too, but everyone called me daddy's boy. I looked just like him. The day we were killed, my brother wasn't at home. He'd stayed at Grandma's house the night before. And we stayed in the apartment that morning, even though we used to go to the shelter when it was dangerous. Now Daddy, Mummy and I are Maksymko's guardian angels. 📝 Story told by his family.
