**It's a child safety rule.** Under UK building regs (Approved Document K for protection from falling, plus BS 8213-1), windows in homes, schools, care homes, rentals, and other buildings where kids or vulnerable people live/work must have restrictors that limit the opening to ~100 mm. This stops children from falling out while still allowing ventilation. It's not a total ban on every window in England—private homes without young kids often don't have them—but it's standard on many modern/upstairs windows and makes portable AC exhaust hoses a pain to vent. Safety first, even if it frustrates cooling in rare heatwaves.

Americans: “Hey Britain, why won’t you invest £200 in an AC unit?” Britain: “Because, unlike American houses, our houses aren’t made of tissue paper and spit, and fitting AC requires expensive renovations.”

Massimo, with 4.1 million followers (including me, previously), has taken the time out of his busy day to block little ol' me. I humbly accept this recognition. For the record, a man blocking someone (except for cases of harassment and abuse) is effeminate, passive aggressive

Within twenty years you will see masses of westerners and even Asians desperate to live in Nairobi. Nairobi is basically where 1980s Bangkok was, a huge UN hub city that was a delicious secret for UN workers and geriatric tourists. Eventually the word got out. I don’t like this, But it’s going to happen. It’s going to become one of the global superstar cities for remote wealth/money.

@fietsprofessor @davewalker This is the most retarded shit I've ever seen. Due to mass migration to the West, putting anything in the street other than a car will mean it'll get stolen. Thanks, lefties!

Living in Italy for two years was a great time, but it made me realize how much we take for granted as Americans. A few things: I paid 2700 €/month for a one-bedroom apartment. My washer and dryer were half of normal size. My “air conditioning” was two of those units that would be in CHUs in Iraq/Afghanistan. If I had the dryer and AC on at the same time, it would trip the circuit breaker. The dryer had no exhaust, so I had to empty a water tank into the sink after drying clothes. Buildings might be built to last in Europe, but houses in the United States are built to live in.

europeans complain about the heat every year but refuse to get so much as a fan for their window let alone an ac system

@dvassallo How do the employees have no risk? If the company fails, or they get fired/laid off, they lose their livelihood, their healthcare, etc.

Let me explain how it works. Buy split AC for 500 euro. The cheapest one. Now get a man in your life to drill two holes in the wall. Mount the AC. Drill another hole in the wall, pull the hose through. Put compressor on ground. Secure it with bolts or screws if wood floor balcony. To save electrical wiring costs, plug it into socket. Done. Wow. And if you don't have a place to put the compressor, may I suggest not living in a 50sqm goybox for 3000 quid a month or whatever you pay in that diverse city.

The reason the UK is so stubborn about AC and ceiling fans is that they don't want to admit that their grid can absolutely not handle it. They can barely keep the lights on as is. That's it. That's the reason why.

@Andy22edwards @CourtneyMeehan3 @Paul1971EFC Lol? Split AC is about 500 euro. Just need one for the bedroom. I'm from Denmark BTW. Or buy a portable one, they're even cheaper, and put the vent through the window. Stop coping, it's embarrassing.

@CourtneyMeehan3 @Paul1971EFC Courtney you absolute gem, where can I get this AC unit, at that price. Having fitted hundreds over the years the cheapest option I can source is £1300 for a 4 way multi split (so 4 rooms not a whole house). The UK doesn’t have AC as standard because it isn’t financially viable

@BitPaine @JohannNadler It's not irrelevant. The load cells are measuring different loads due to uneven floor (tiles). Never place a scale across tiles.

so, fun fact about digital scales: most have fairly wide margins of error, like +/- 1-2%, which is 2-4 lbs on a 200 lbs person, BUT they mask this by storing your weight in memory for a certain period of time - usually about 15 minutes - if you step off and step right back on, the scale will recognize this and serve you the old weight to mask the measurement error. so it is likely this person spent just long enough in the shower for the memory to dump, and she got an honest re-read within the scale’s MoE.
