In 2022, the Western Cape Government (@WesternCapeGov) published the Inclusionary Housing Policy Framework to guide municipalities in developing their own policies. Yet, instead of acting, the Mayor @geordinhl points to two cities in the United States as cautionary examples, claiming inclusionary housing drives developers away, without explaining why this was the case in these two cities. Cape Town cannot afford further delay. This is self serving and disingenuous. How the DA governs is totally informed by their ideology. Cape Town has a housing crisis. It’s DA ideology that led Zille to tell me using well located public land for affordable housing was “oversubsidising the poor”. It’s this same ideology that led her to doggedly pursue the private sale of Tafelberg School even when we (me in the City) offered to purchase it from the Province for affordable housing. It’s DA ideology about public assets that led Hill-Lewis to decide to sell the Good Hope Centre. It’s DA ideology that led Smith to create a concentration camp in Strandfontein to “house” homeless people. It’s dishonest to pretend ideology doesn’t influence how a city is governed and who gets to benefit.
