My largest report yet for @ITIFdc analyzes regulatory roadblocks to a competitive space industry in the United States. Maintaining the edge in space innovation over China is crucial for the U.S.'s economic and security goals. Read the report here: itif.org/publications/2…

This is an interesting one for the tech policy and spectrum wonks out there, but one (more serious) note: Having a GPS backup is good (especially as China expands anti-space capabilities), but that system doesn't need to be built in the lower 900 MHz band.
Ben Brody@BenBrodyDC

This story is so much fun! Committees pitted against each other, Hill vs FCC, retail giants against a little-known company with a stable of powerful Republican lobbyists — all over a little bit of spectrum

It's crazy that agencies continue to seek funding for projects to close a non-existent deployment gap, even though several years ago, the @USGAO reported there were 13 different deployment programs across multiple agencies.
Joe Kane@thejoekane

This is silly. We are in the midst of spending $21 billion on rural broadband through BEAD plus $4.5 billion per year from USF High Cost plus dozens of other fragmented programs. Deployment gaps are solved. We should be cutting these programs, not resurrecting them.

🚨NEW: Ransomware attacks on U.S. government entities have caused an estimated $1.09B in downtime since 2018—& the threat is accelerating. Yet our latest report finds most state & local governments remain chronically underprepared...🧵

That's right, but the main issue is that High Cost is spending 5x more than Lifeline for a problem we already solved. We can fix affordability if we (at least) flip that ratio.

. @FCC commish @AGomezFCC tells @NTCAconnect confernece: LIfeline is "a measly $9.25" per month, and Congressional reform of USF needs to look at affordability. @Comm_Daily

Congress is moving forward on a national data privacy framework. 🔐 The SECURE Data Act signals a shift toward clear, consistent federal rules that prioritize real consumer protections—without replicating the burdensome compliance model of GDPR.

Ooooh, and now asking about the impacts on space innovation made by having a vertically integrated manufacturing base... just you wait. Just you wait.

Question asked by @housescience: "Where could China surpass the U.S. in space innovation over the next 25 years?" If you're curious about this... stay tuned for my next report 👀

One of the most important reasons for replacing the @Space_Station is, as @NASAAdmin just noted to Congress, that the only other space station in orbit is owned and operated by China. The U.S. cannot let China's space station be the only option for science in microgravity.

As Americans rely on satellite technology for everything from entertainment to GPS, the U.S. must maintain our position as a global leader. To do so, the regulatory process must keep pace with the speed of innovation. During today’s Communications & Technology Subcommittee hearing, I discussed how the SAT Streamlining Act will help do just that.

The House E&C Communications & Technology subcommittee is currently discussing the Satellite and Telecommunications (SAT) Streamlining Act. As @RepRichHudson mentions in the opening statement, the bill is aimed at streamlining licensing of space-based communications services, which would ensure greater broadband connectivity across the U.S. See CCIA Space & Spectrum Center’s report on how LEO broadband has the potential to increase accessibility, reduce latency, and increase speed of high-speed connectivity: buff.ly/EMAa9C5

I feel like I hit a big DC milestone today when, due to disrupted metro service, I had to ride a scooter into work wearing a full suit and tie.

.@howardlutnick is right: the 1st round of BEAD funds should close all deployment gaps. It'd be wasteful to fund deployment after that when larger causes of the digital divide remain. The statute says close the digital divide. That's not a catchall; that's the statutory mandate.

MORAN pressing LUTNICK on non-deployed BEAD funds. Moran and other Rs want that money going to broadband connectivity but Lutnick won't commit. "I would hope that you do not use that last catch all phrase [of the law] to do something other than broadband deployment"

@NASAAdmin tells @housescience that @NASA "should constantly be recalibrating our mission to do the impossible when others cannot" regarding NASA's relationship to the growing commercial industry. This recalibration is crucial for the future of how NASA missions are carried out.
