Back in August, Google announced that they were going to begin requiring Developer Verification in order to install an app on any certified Android device. Even if you were sideloading an app, you'd need to be verified. Last week, they followed up with more specifics. They're going to introduce an "advanced flow" for power users - a one-time process that would allow your device to install any app, even without developer verification. The process is a bit lengthy, involving a device reset and a 24-hour waiting period. But once you go through it, you won't need to go through it again. And for students and hobbyists, they're going to introduce "limited distribution" accounts, which won't require all the same steps as full verification, but limits the number of devices your app can be installed on. What do you think? Did Google strike the right balance between openness and security here? We'll talk through all of this during tomorrow's livestream, but in the meantime, I'd love to hear your comments about it.

@rishabmishraa @theliverdoc People grow out of gaming, it's completely natural. Even i can't get myself to play the newer games coz I know I'll hardly get an hour max to play.

@theliverdoc Doc, any tips on rekindling the love for gaming? The 30 year old me has the setup that's beyond the wildest dreams of the 10 year old me, but somehow it feels like a chore to even boot up the XB/log-n to Steam.

AndroidX quietly dropped Remote Compose 👀 It’s the next level of server driven UI. It sends actual native UI drawing operations from server to client. You update or even ship new UI from server and render it natively on Android. Powerful.

@johncrickett Qwen is dead, too. No more updates to open models, and the ones we have are still a generation behind. Anyway, at the current rate of hardware shortage, even if somebody publishes a new model, the hardware to run it will not be ready accessible.

A mouse trap with free cheese is closing. Cursor locks SOTA models under Max mode, Anthropic is charging high prices for code reviews. That’s just a start. Using AI for coding will become more expensive, not cheaper. The only ceiling to price hikes is human labor cost.

This is my feeling too. I know how much work has been put into making Android Studio great, and I really appreciate it. But my reality is that I don’t find the need to open it almost for anything anymore.
montano@lucas_montano

IDE like Android Studio is in real danger i don’t open it that much anymore after using claude CLI + neovim (if needed) even for profiling and benchmarking, i just fire up claude in the terminal + adb and it handles literally everything: perfetto traces, simpleperf, dumpsys

@rivuchakraborty Don't get me wrong, I actually love the faster outcomes and the work I am doing is definitely innovative and interesting. I'm just feeling nostalgic about the pure joy of typing every line of code manually and doing it all from scratch!

Started building my own Wispr Flow alternative - Aawaaz (sound/voice) Going to be Free, Local-first (or local-only), Privacy friendly, yet super fast and super accurate! Basic transcription working well already and will make this a top-class alternative very soon!!

Codingwithmitch.com will most likely be shutting down at some point this year. I've been at Block for 4.5 years now and I have no plans to produce new content any time soon for codingwithmitch. Thanks for the great years!

@Zhuinden @KalumeYves I think its same for many fields in software , people just use AI to do stuff now and so dont need to get into these arguments.

@KalumeYves it almost feels like people just lost the drive and interest in discussing Android development in general, and it's quite sad happy to be proven wrong though

Other than the GPT 5.4 news, there seems to be another good one. Looks like GitHub Copilot has increased the context size for Claude Opus 4.6 and GPT-5.4 (and codex models). Opus used to be 128K and 5.3 codex was 272K. Now 192K and 400K respectiely.

I was today years old when I had to wrap a ComposeView inside a NestedScrollView, so the scrollable content inside the ComposeView would be able to scroll not only "downwards", but also "upwards" (instead of collapsing the bottom sheet). Issue since 2022. #comment37" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">issuetracker.google.com/issues/1743486…

Programming was deeply satisfying work to me. Work for hours/days before getting the payoff of the code working well on your machine. I’m feeling so much friction now to open the editor and do this kind of task by hand, but also increasingly depressed with the nature of work in an AI assisted dev workflow. Back and forth prompting seems to eat at my soul. Need to find a balance that brings back some of the toil.
