The moment you have all been waiting for, the event of the summer is upon us!!! Come on out and see how dysfunctional our farm is , farmers and non farmers alike!! And to top it off competition style BBQ as featured at events such as Agronomy on Ice, @mjdufault #rootconnections #farmtotable

I’m at the Missouri State Fair this week. Walking around on Sunday, we found this unbelievably amazing quilt that takes weather to the next level. Read the note before looking at the design.

Each flag signified a match to be found on playing cards during the scavenger hunt. We matched seeds to plants, dug in the dirt, answered trivia questions, and dug in buckets of seed to find matching cards. Hearing them say “that was fun” is the kid stamp of approval in my book!

I had fun prepping for ag in the classroom lessons for K-5 in EGF! A seed scavenger hunt ending with farm toy machinery play moving “planted corn” from combine to grain bin.

First burndown herbicide pass is critical for weed control with no pre-plant tillage. Scout early to know what weeds are in your field and catch them in time. Kochia can be extra difficult. Suspect a lot of this kochia “tumbled in” to field. Control when 1-2 inches tall.

No-till demo field est. 2021. Aka “transitional till” at the REC. Side by side w/conventional but ground is slightly different. Elevated salts & sodium levels in no-till. There’s a lot to learn from first few years into no-till as a new practice on the farm (or REC).

Not a single annual crop will grow in an EC from 5-30 like a salt tolerant grass. Consider where you can use salt tolerant perennial grasses strategically across the farm too reduce annual inputs and help reduce salts, typically along wetland areas/headlands.

Observations of what’s growing best given the conditions (Russian olive not planted): - Shrubs do better than trees -silverberry -amer maple - woods rose - false indigo - green ash starting to seed itself Obvious gradient of trees growing better/taller in plot with lower EC/SAR.

Up in Langdon at REC today at the first stop of the soil health tour: saline/sodic tree and shrub trial. You know it’s a saline site when you’ve got foxtail barley growing along the tree row!
