I'm hearing that "hollywood" crushed the below the line employees with stagnant, underpaid "contracts" and that lil Curry (son of Jeff Barker, not some hollywood "newcomer") is saying the people who actually made the film for him should be happy for the exposure. Can he "legally say that" because "they signed the contract?" sure. Is it a good way to get started? No. Was he coached to say that and not thank anyone by name? Probably. It's nothing new. But let's not elevate Curry too high, he's just another corporate shill pretending everything you see on the screen was "his".

The conspiracy theories surrounding Jason Blum and OBSESSION are getting ridiculous. Curry Barker made a great horror movie for roughly $750,000. Focus and Blumhouse recognized what he had, put their distribution and marketing infrastructure behind it, and negotiated compensation for the value they believed they could add. That is not a hijacking. That is producing. We saw a version of this with SHELBY OAKS. Chris Stuckmann made an independent horror film, Mike Flanagan came aboard as an executive producer, and his name gave the project added credibility and market value. SHELBY OAKS made around $8 million worldwide. OBSESSION is approaching $300 million. The difference is not some sinister conspiracy. OBSESSION connected with audiences on a level almost nobody could have predicted. That was the gamble. Blum reportedly negotiated huge performance bonuses. Good for him. They only became huge because a $750,000 movie turned into a historic theatrical hit. Could Barker’s team have negotiated better terms? Maybe. Protecting his ownership, backend, creative control, and future leverage matters. But that is a contract discussion. It is not proof that Jason Blum stole Curry Barker’s career. Sometimes Hollywood crushes artists. Sometimes everybody makes the right bet and wins. Not every success story needs a villain.
