The 21st century is a new world as far as the world's coastal states are concerned. Any great power that wants to have global influence in the 21st century must start by wooing Indonesia, Malaysia, Iran, Egypt, Algeria, Morocco, Spain, Yemen, Somalia, the Philippines, Columbia, Nicaragua, and similarly situated medium or even lesser powers with geography and geology suited for securely hosting large missile and drone forces. Contrariwise, almost any country with a sufficient geography and geology will be able to protect its continental territory and littoral oceans from even great power maritime assaults.
