The idea sounds rather extraordinary to us now: they wanted to determine whether ordinary, middle-class families would embrace whole-house air conditioning, and whether it could be made practical on a broad scale. The grand opening drew crowds. Visitors wandered through the homes, stepping out of the Texas heat into interiors that felt, for many, almost unreal. Builders and promoters leaned into the spectacle, presenting the houses as a glimpse of how Americans might live in the years ahead. Those who bought homes in the Village became participants in a year-long study. Researchers tracked everything from electricity costs to how well residents slept at night.
