Iran announces alternative routes in Strait of Hormuz to avoid Mines!! This is HUGE!! 🚨 Lots of questions – but arguably this is the worst case scenario for shipping. First, we must consider if this is indeed the case, or is this a way of Iran scaremongering ships into using the Iranian promulgated routes, thus demonstrating de facto control of the Strait of Hormuz? Masters/owners/charters/insurers are probably more inclined to opt for a ‘safe route’ if they believe mines have been placed in the TSS. What we do know: Multiple ships have transited the SoH, with AIS on and off since the beginning of the conflict - Would suggest no mines. But none used the TSS - Does not guarantee no mines. If the TSS is mined, the recovery for safe passage will take months at least. Another If, is that IF mines have been placed, they will probably be tethered sea mines. Tethered sea mines do become adrift in inclement weather (think Black Sea) – which, IF mines are present, does not guarantee safety of ships transiting the new routes issued by Iran. Re the ‘reopening’ of the Strait: 4 ships passed through the Strait of Hormuz on Day 1 of the ceasefire. Just 4. No gas carriers. No oil carriers. 4 dry cargo. Most of which engaged in Iranian trade. ~1000 ships are stuck in Arabian Gulf. In the remaining 13 days of the ceasefire, that means ~996 ships need to exit to clear the backlog… the maths don’t math. On tolls, The $1 per barrel / $2m per laden tanker, in Crypto/Yuan is not sustainable for GCC states’ exports, global imports and importantly, the consumer. So, something has to change.
