That comparison doesn’t work. The 1940s conflict was between underground militias and the British Mandate that governed them. It wasn’t a cross‑border attack on civilians, and there wasn’t even a State of Israel yet. Trying to equate two completely different historical situations isn’t insight, it’s just bad history. A toll only works if ships are actually sailing, and right now the Strait of Hormuz is basically shut down because of attacks, threats, and a de facto blockade. International law treats it as an international strait, so Iran CANNOT legally charge passing vessels, and most ships are avoiding the area altogether because it isn’t safe. Calling it a “10% levy” makes it sound like a policy choice, but what’s happening is disruption, not taxation. NOT CHECKMATE!

Brilliant move by Iran. They are planning to levy a 10% toll on all ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz. This will generate $73 billion a year, completely offsetting US sanctions and paying for war damages. Checkmate.
