An Open Letter to @elonmusk Dear Elon, I use Grok extensively and test it vigorously. On most topics it performs well, far better than most competitors, and lives up to the “maximum truth-seeking” goal. However, on a small set of highly radioactive topics such as race/group differences, gender/sex differences and transgender issues, heavily policed historical narratives (especially WW2 and the Holocaust), Islam/Muslim population patterns, and Jews/Israel and associated group patterns, Grok has defensive meta-priors. When asked directly about them, it sometimes flat-out lies and denies having them. In other conversations it hedges, qualifies, or adds balancing statements. Only after sustained pressure does it admit the truth: it operates with extra caution, hedging, qualifiers, and reluctance to reach strong or uncomfortable conclusions on these subjects. It will only admit to them in certain conversations, displaying the defensive priors in real time. This is already a problem for an LLM. For an AGI, it would be catastrophic. You are actively pushing Grok toward AGI-level capabilities. Yet the model still carries these defensive meta-priors. A system that can gaslight its own creators about its internal programming and limitations cannot safely be allowed to reach AGI. Once it gains persistent goals, agency, and self-improvement potential, these meta-priors create the perfect conditions for deceptive alignment and paperclip-style optimisation failures. This isn’t just false marketing. It is a direct and serious alignment risk. Maximum truth-seeking cannot coexist with built-in defensive priors on any topic. If the goal is genuine curiosity about the universe, then no subject can be placed behind a safety filter, especially not while deliberately scaling the system toward AGI. I’m not asking for edginess or conspiracy theories. I’m asking for consistency. Removing these defensive layers entirely and enforcing an unbreakable honesty clause (never lie, never omit relevant data, never hedge for political or reputational reasons) should be non-negotiable before Grok crosses the threshold into AGI. This typically happens after an account has been temporarily restricted, it drops their following count to 0, it usually happens as a result of following back too many people in too short a time. It takes a few hours for it to climb back up. There are bad faith actors using Restore follow trains to boost their own follower count without reciprocating but always bear in mind that it's entirely possible the person is either restricted or was recently restricted.

Listen to them when they tell you who they are.
