You would find the same level of performance on the same "typical" hardware (the 486dx was the latest and 16MB was 8x the system requirements) on each release of Office through 2007 (95, 97, 2000, XP/2002, 2003, 2007). There was a major rearchitecture to share code in Office 97 which changed the multi-app scenarios for the better. In 2002 we tuned for the NT kernel (even though by 2000 all self-hosting was NT, customers had not moved yet so we still supported W95). Somewhat confusingly we still supported 9x on Office XP as well which genuinely annoyed people internally. O2003 was NT only. O2003 ran on W2000+. As a rule of thumb, Word, Excel, PowerPoint remained roughly 2-6MB working set that entire time, including min footprint when app was minimized. Even the move to 32 bits did not double system requirements. Outlook definitely changed the equation as did running multiple products at once. For a while system requirements were "per app". Then in 97 Outlook was called out separately as requiring more. Since it was running all the time it did change the memory profile of the suite. With a browser running all the time and consuming a lot of memory (Win95+ along with the networking stack) we started to see competition for memory on low end (4-8MB) systems. The move to NT reduced this but increased total system footprint. AMA...I can't tell you how carefully this was measured all the time and debated constantly. Win95 in particular was a huge "battle" between Windows and Office over what the system requirements should be and what constituted typical use in order to support those. Consider this essay on the box :-) For more of this epic experience see -> …rdcoresoftware.learningbyshipping.com/p/035-windows-…

From startup to shutdown, loading Windows 3.1, MS Word, and MS Excel, on a computer several orders of magnitude slower and with 1000x less RAM than a modern PC. Note how snappy everything is. iT's dOinG mOre No it isn't. We don't have to live like this!

This useless government's MO is going to be 1. They start rationing fuel first. Not more than 2 litres per day per bike or some nonsense like that. 2. They're gonna ask for vehicle proof and scan your RC copy, upload on to a portal (MyBharatMyPetrol) before selling petrol. You can see it coming.

Claude is overhyped! It always makes mistakes when I create car comparison reports for my clients, so I’ve now started doing them manually (for the most important 52 features). What's the point when you need to recheck your work, every single point. ChatGPT and Gemini are even worse for such things which require close scrutiny of each point. They rely on online information which itself sometimes is incorrect.

Hyped hai Bhai. 4 cars ke features ki report banane bola to kuch bhi ulta seedha bana deta hai yeh. Aise hi paise waste hue mere. Har report dhyan se check kar ke galtiyaan theek karni padti hai top 52 features ke comparison ki. Jis car ko test nahi kiya gya usko bhi 5 star bana deta hai. Foolproof system banana abhi door ki baat hai.

@SanjaiGandhi Use pdf.js for fully localised parsing. It’s a Mozilla’s open-source PDF rendering library, originally built to power Firefox’s built-in PDF viewer. It’s written entirely in JavaScript and runs in the browser.

When GST rates were rejigged, companies simply increased their base prices / reduced weightage of their products. Now same tactic is being used to increase prices citing gas shortages.

Totally. Tickets for such an event should start at 500 but was quite shocked to see opening prices at 3000. Rahman performance aside, practice sessions have been free in the past - what's the logic behind the pricing 🤷
The Reverse Sweep@trspodcastt

Absolutely loving that CSK fans aren't paying absurd prices for the pre event show. They have really failed to sell the tickets looks like? I feel CSK fans have realised not to spend money out of emotions. Intention good from the team but the execution/pricing not so good? #CSK #IPL2026

Putting ads in an OS is plain BS. “Reducing” them is even so.
Zac Bowden@zacbowden

BREAKING: Microsoft just announced several major changes to Windows 11 in an effort to win back user trust and evolve the platform into something people will actually want to use over macOS and Linux! It's a huge announcement that addresses Windows 11's biggest problems today, tackling core fundamental issues such as unreliable system performance, UX consistency, AI bloat and general enshittification. Microsoft has confirmed that this year, it WILL be reducing where ads and Copilot appear throughout the system, including in Start, Widgets, Notepad, Photos, and more! File Explorer and Windows Search will be upgraded with improved performance and capabilities that make finding apps and files much faster and easier. The OS will become lighter with less RAM and system utilization at idle, making it smoother to run on low end hardware with limited memory. These improvements will also benefit high-end PCs too. Windows Update will be improved with more granular controls and the ability to postpone updates for longer, along with reducing how often the OS needs to restart to install an update. Microsoft has also confirmed that it's bringing back fan favourite features such as the ability to move the Taskbar! It's also working to update more areas of the system shell with modern WinUI designs, which should make Windows 11 feel more coherent and complete. There's much more in the announcement, and it honestly all sounds too good to be true. Microsoft really is listening to feedback, and is eager to make Windows the BEST desktop OS on the market. More details including when these changes will arrive in the link! windowscentral.com/microsoft/wind…

Almost half a million views and loads of comments... Not one saying Airtel is honest. Amazing how companies when they are large and are 'essential' can get by with shoddy customer service. Meanwhile, us D2C brands have to constantly be on guard to protect reputation from one order mistake going viral on social media 🤷

.@Airtel_Presence @airtelindia YOU FUCKING ASSHOLES You have reset the wifi router in my office without my permission using the backdoor that you guys have. Now my entire network is offline. I'm done with your shit company. Throwing your shit device and connection back at you. This is exactly what I had warned when I took this connection that I have no control over the router in my own office. Lesson learnt.

Fake IPL Player It's not about any player, it's about a blog that created fear and controversy during the 2009 IPL. The biggest mystery surrounding that blog was that no one knew who was writing it at the time. Initially few people believed it was being written by someone from KKR. This assumption came from the chaos within the KKR camp during that period. Another interesting thing about the blog was that the writer never used real player names. For example,he referred Ganguly as Lordy and Sachin as Little Monster. Many people read that blog and few believed in those writings about dressing room conversations and team selection etc. But in the end it turned out the blog wasn't written by anyone from KKR or even someone involved with the IPL. The writer was a bangalore based man Anupam Mukerji, who revealed his identity in 2010. He said that he had made up all those stories.

@localteaparty Last time I went to buy a refrigerator, they didn’t have the model I was looking for. The (over) enthusiastic salesman asked me to visit the refrigerator company showroom down the road, check the features and then come and book it in Croma 😀

Went to Croma recently to buy a phone. I knew exactly what I wanted. Guess how long it took for them to bill me after exchanging my old phone? 1 hour. Scan the old phone, generate QR code, send to biller, enter mobile number, generate OTP, resend OTP, enter OTP, download ID proof, send to biller, upload ID proof, generate another code, oh we don't have stock in this color....ayyayyayyaya Customer is not the king. Customer is the last incidental step in the giant data capturing industry. The consumer industry is an absolute mess.
