Flooding has affected 18 counties across Kenya, displacing more than 12,300 households and leaving thousands of people in urgent need of health services, clean water and safe shelter. My thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones in this devastaing disaster. To support response and recovery efforts, @WHO today handed over medical supplies and equipment for cholera prevention and treatment, water treatment and trauma kits. These materials can assist around 5,000 people.

Had important discussions at the #UKGlobalhealthSummit2026 on jointly finding solutions for the global health workforce crisis. As guardians of the global promise of health and well-being for all, we must confront a difficult truth: our health workforce is not fit for purpose. By 2030, the world will be short of 11 million health workers—it means 11 million missing pairs of hands, minds and hearts. Workforce is the backbone of every health system. As @WHO we’re working with countries to build, reinforce & sustain functioning systems.

My thoughts are with the families who have lost loved ones in the devastating floods and landslides in Gamo Zone, South #Ethiopia Region. Climate-related disasters are becoming more frequent, increasing health risks. The affected communities in Gamo face heightened risks of malnutrition and diseases such as cholera and malaria. @WHO is deploying first responders to support national rapid response teams, coordinating the health response and delivering emergency medical supplies.

My deepest condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of @UNICEF’s Karine Buisset, who died while serving communities in Goma, #DRC. The safety and security of humanitarian workers and the people they serve must be protected. #NotATarget

To mark #WorldHearingDay and #WorldOralHealthDay, both commemorated in March every year, I was pleased to join a community screening drive hosted by @WHOAFRO in Brazzaville today. The drive encourages simple, proactive habits for lifelong ear and oral health and provides referrals to health services where needed. @WHOAFRO remains committed to advancing ear and oral health in the African region and empowering communities to take ownership of their health and well-being.

Pleasure meeting today with Hon. Florent Ntsiba, Congo’s State Minister and Director of the President’s Cabinet. Thank you for the warm welcome and the important discussion on reinforcing our longstanding partnership with Congo🇨🇬, the home of @WHOAFRO. We greatly value the collaboration with the government, appreciate the prioritization of health among national development goals and support the efforts to attain health for all. I assure you of our commitment as WHO to continue serving as a strong regional hub for health leadership in Africa.

Across Africa today, conflicts are driving families into some of the largest and overburdened refugee camps on earth. In Busuma refugee site in Burundi, where I just concluded a two-day visit, hundreds of thousands of families have sought refuge. @WHO and partners are providing emergency assistance, but more is needed to meet the huge needs. WHO will continue our lifesaving assistance in these settings and call for increased international solidarity to provide the vital support the affected population so direly need.

Thank you, your excellency, @Burundi1stLady, for the warm welcome and the important work you are doing to advance national development through access to basic services. Health services and health education are reaching communities in practical and visible ways, especially women, children and young people through your work. @WHO is proud to stand with you and the government in strengthening primary health care to protect and promote health for all.

Grateful to Burundi for the generosity in hosting tens of thousands of refugees from neighbouring countries. I visited Busuma refugee site, which hosts over 66,000 refugees facing extreme living conditions with inadequate basic services. @WHO and partners are supporting the government to provide humanitarian assistance. A WHO-established clinic is providing essential medical services, including treatment for common illnesses, vaccination, safe childbirth, mental health and psychosocial care. WHO will continue supporting the ongoing humanitarian responses and reaffirms commitment to Burundi in the efforts to strengthen the health system and advance towards health for all.

We stand with Burundi as it works to bolster the health system to protect populations, advance national development and economic resilience.

Visited the #mpox treatment centre in Burundi🇧🇮 which has been instrumental in the outbreak response. To date, over 4,600 have been treated at the centre, established with support from @WHO. Burundi has strengthened control measures since reporting the first case in 2024, with disease surveillance, testing, prevention, treatment and community collaboration stepped up, leading to a decline in cases. WHO continues to support the country across key response areas to protect communities and end the outbreak.

Good meeting with Dr Lydwine Baradahana, Burundi’s Minister of Health, and discuss our collaboration with the government in advancing health. Glad to hand over 3 vehicles and 24 tonnes of essential medical supplies to support cholera response. @WHO reaffirms commitment to continue working with Burundi to strengthen primary health care, invest in health workforce and accelerate progress towards #HealthForAll.

An honour to meet today with @GeneralNeva, H.E Evariste Ndayishimiye, President of Burundi. Congratulation on your role as the @_AfricanUnion Chairperson and appreciate the commitment to advancing African cooperation and integration. Burundi has made notable public health progress, including elimination of trachoma as a public health problem, controlling TB and onchocerciasis, and introducting the malaria vaccine. @WHO remains committed to working closely with the government and partners to strengthen health systems and ensure a healthy future for all.

I was honoured to participate in the inauguration of the Kwimba Maternal and Newborn Care Unit in Mwanza Region, #Tanzania. It was a powerful demonstration of leadership, partnership and community commitment. I commend the government for advancing global resolutions and contributing evidence to @WHO guidelines that shape collective efforts to improve maternal, newborn and child health.

Refugee communities face heightened risks from epidemic-prone diseases, malnutrition and limited access to essential services—threats that demand urgent, coordinated action. Thank you @Barbaradotse, @UNHCRTanzania Representative, and Ronald Tran Ba Huy, @WFP_Tanzania Representative, for productive discussion and commitment to healthier, safer refugee communities in Tanzania. Safeguarding the health and well-being of refugee populations is not only a humanitarian imperative, but a critical investment in health security.

Had great discussion today with Prof Kaushik Ramaiya, a strong advocate of #NCDs prevention and care. We deliberated on key priorities for the region in controlling, preventing and managing noncommunicable diseases. Accelerating prevention, early detection and building stronger health systems will save lives and shape a healthier future.

Commendable step by Tanzania 🇹🇿 in bringing lifesaving care closer to communities with today’s inauguration of the Kwimba Maternal and Newborn Care Unit in Mwanza Region. Honoured to represent @DrTedros at the launch of this facility, which demonstrates commitment to strengthening maternal and newborn care. Grateful to the government, the Doris Mollel Foundation, @KeepAChildAlive and all partners for this vital collaboration. WHO stands with Tanzania to ensure every mother and every newborn has the opportunity to survive and thrive.

An honour to meet H.E. @SuluhuSamia, President of Tanzania🇹🇿, and a valuable opportunity to exchange on national health priorities. We discussed Tanzania’s progress in reducing maternal mortality, advancing universal health insurance, local pharmaceutical production, strengthening health security and digital health. I commended the investments in expanding district and ward-level hospitals and dispensaries, bringing essential services closer to communities. With our partners, @WHO stands strongly with Tanzania and the region to promote health and reinforce health systems, ensure equity and leave no-one behind.

Congratulations to Kenya on the introduction of lenacapavir, a twice-yearly HIV prevention injection. This marks an important step forward in strengthening HIV prevention efforts. Long-acting tools can help reach more people, especially those at higher risk, with discreet and effective protection. @WHO will continue working with Member States to advance equitable access to HIV prevention and accelerate progress toward ending AIDS as a public health threat. #EndAIDS
