Today I noticed a Prop firm operator encouraging a loosening of rules. Some of them may make some sense but I want to focus on one that has had a whole lot of drama attached to it, even before Prop trading was a thing. That is news trading. When a scheduled news announcement comes out, the market for the most part pulls its pricing. There are some prices there with limited to no depth but for the most part execution is non-existent. To get fills, the spreads widen and on some currency pairs and metals they occasionally go beyond 100 pips. Brokers and Prop firms have to balance and manage their reputation - if you provide that 100 pip spread, you will be dealt a heavy reputation hit as the market dynamics are not fully understood and traders are quick to call it out. Both sets of organizations tend to filter the feeds with spread caps to manage reputation. If your feed has a capped spread on it during news - you have no choice but to b-book those orders. As such brokers and props don’t want this type of trading, it's not built in reality. It is also the easiest way to cheat between two prop firms if you have two sets of ID’s (buy GBP/USD pre news at one, sell EUR/USD pre news at the other as an example). To top it off - if you were to a-book someone who only trades news on CFD’s the liquidity providers will likely call you up and say “hey, what is this junk, cut it off or we will drop your feed” as the order flow is toxic and no one can make money from it. Remember, this isn’t only relevant to entries, it is also relevant to exits. So, whilst it's great to have the idea of making trading more accessible to all types of traders, some of our ideas must be built in reality. If a firm has a timing rule based around news that doesn’t result in a breach of account - that is the healthiest long-term solution. Hopefully this briefly explains the story of news trading rules and the necessary evil that they are.
